‘After Dark’ is out now on all streaming platforms!

Our new EP is a collection of reimagined songs from both ‘In Desolate Times’ and ‘BCATQB’.

We wanted to ensure that each song was different from the original, so we stripped some back completely, and played around with tempos and arrangements. Who knew ‘Holding on to Myself’ would work so well as a country song?

The entire project wouldn’t have been possible without our incredibly talented friend, music marvel and producer of BCATQB - @stevelarkemejia who co-wrote, mixed and produced each song

A huge thankyou to @tomhappy for mastering the EP. You’re an absolute legend!

And finally a massive shout out to @nasmilarkemejia who lent her vocals on ‘GIJKSM’. You smashed it Nasmi!

Tallow Pt.2

Lyrically this song was 22 years in the making. I had to take myself back to 2004; a time when smart phones were a thing of the future, internet cafes were a hive of activity even if everyone was only logged into MSN Messenger. No Google Maps, just a Lonely Planet guide and a mini disc player full of albums ripped off Limewire. And as for a camera, just a ruck sack full of disposables.

I was 18, travelling around Australia without a care in the world. Up until a near fatal day off the east coast at a non-swimming beach known as Tallow. Ignoring the dangers, four naive kids got caught in a riptide and for the two of us who made it back to shore to raise the alarm that our friends had disappeared under the foam, a desperate wait endured, wondering if they had been swallowed by the ocean for good.

If you’ve ever been caught in a rip tide, you’ll understand the panic. Up is down, down is up. Each time you get to the surface another wave pummels you back under again. It’s exhausting and petrifying. To this day thinking about the experience makes me short of breath.

I had touched on this topic previously, whilst in a band as a kid, not long after, when the experience was still raw. I always felt I didn’t do the subject matter justice first time round, so 22 years later I opened up my old photo albums and revisited my travels, before writing the lyrics for what became the second version; Tallow Part 2.

All four of us made it out that day. Fate had it that a group of surfers who were then leaving, came to our aid to pluck our idiot pommie butts from the oceans tight grasp 🌊

And thankfully, we all survived to live another day!

Matt
