Last week as part of Parramatta's Lit! the draft of I Can't Believe It's Not Parramatta went from draft 9 to draft 13 with thanks to writers refining their work and listening and watching the audience response to this new mosaic play inspired by the past present and future aspirations of the city.

Written by Linda Atkins, Saurabh Bhattacharya, Micharne Cloughley, Laneikka Denne, Chris Fleming and Marcus Khoudair, the work asks us to look at Parramatta — in all its brutality, beauty and absurdity — to better understand who we are and where we are going.

Performed by Jane Phegan, Sandy Greenwood, Idam Sondhi, Rami Saaid, Olivia Xegas and Ameer Di Meglio.

Creative Producer and Director, Augusta Supple and Assistant Director Elyse Zouroudis.

Thanks to support from @creative.australia , @creatensw and @cityofparramatta the playreadings reached audiences @thewhitlaminstitute @phive.ps and @hambledoncottagemuseum

This new full length work with more than 40 characters for a cast of six actors has been developed over 25 days by 6 writers.

It's amazing what can happen when a group of passionate and talented people come together.

🔥PLAYREADING: I Can't Believe It's Not Parramatta!?🔥

I Can’t Believe It’s Not Parramatta!? is a bold, ensemble-driven theatrical mosaic about one of Australia’s most significant and rapidly changing cities.

As cranes rise, buildings disappear, memories are unearthed and new communities reshape Parramatta, a chorus of voices competes to define what the city has been, what it is and what it might become.

Drafted in situ across Parramatta over 20 days in February and March 2026, the play brings together history, myth, memory, imagination and absurdity. Twenty-seven characters spanning more than two centuries collide in a fast-moving work that shifts between realism, satire, documentary and portraiture.

NB This event, it will be presented on the verandah of Hambledon Cottage, with the audience invited to bring picnic rugs and lawn chairs to experience the reading while sitting underneath one of the oldest cork trees in Australia.

Yesterday, Rex Cramphorn Studio, USYD Department of Theatre and Performance Studies.

An industry and community reading of @theparramattaplayproject, a new work for the stage about Parramatta, co-written by seven writers, and launched, produced, and directed by true mentor and real artist @suppleaugusta.

Over weeks of guided writing and “free range chicken” exploring around Parramatta, we collaborated on a mosaic of place from within it. This week, three days of intense workshopping with actors Shondelle, Maggie, Sandy, Jane, Tamara, Ameer, Rami, Idam, and Felino. Honoured.

From Augusta, I learned the feeling of being attuned to others’ points of view, to actually feeling them, to relating to them as an artistry quite additional to the art they produce—to the foundation of trust. What a leader.

Paris, Chris, Laneikka, Micharne, Saurabh, Linda. My six elemental co-writers. From them I learned an immensity that will take some time to settle into. This field of energy is evolving, as is the project, with more to come on it.

For now, the inimitable Aunty Jules captured these sensations in her living weaving (thank you for showing me that photo): intricate, unfinished, inwards and outwards.

💛The Parramatta Play Project - Fay 13 💛

With many thanks to Business Western Sydney and Executive Director David Borger for providing time and space to The Parramatta Play Project.

The Business Western Sydney website says:

"As a leading proponent for Western Sydney, we have led the conversation for dozens of major successful campaigns that have transformed the region. The outcomes from our campaigns have delivered tens of billions of dollars in immediate economic impact and become the engines to drive jobs and regional prosperity for generations to come."

On Day 13, the Playwrights were invited to write at the Business centre. It was also the day the leader of the opposition was being hosted by Business Western Sydney. After a long day David Borger came to say hello, share a little about his journey as an advocate, his past as the youngest mayor in Parramatta's History, and his vision for the future.

David is an incredible advocate and supporter of the arts, and he continues to speak about the role of culture in making the city a much loved global city.
