in the software developer world, there’s a well-known open-source operating system called Ubuntu, first released in 2004. its name comes from an African philosophy rooted in the idea of “i am because we are.”

at its core, ubuntu is the belief that our humanity is inseparable from our relationships with others. that who we are is shaped by the people around us, and that none of us exists entirely on our own.

yesterday, i spent the afternoon at the beach surrounded by so many people i love, all of whom have entered my life at different times, in different places, and through different versions of me. some have known me since middle school, some from college or my [treacherous] 20s, and some i’ve only had the privilege of meeting this year.

as i reflect on 35 years of life, i feel overwhelmed with love and gratitude. i’ve become no stranger to impostor syndrome, grief, or trauma, but more importantly, i’ve come to know resilience. and the older i get, the more i realize that resilience isn’t always something we find within ourselves. sometimes, it’s something other people help us carry.

in this life, anyone who claims to be entirely “self-made” is a liar. i know i’m not. every version of me has been shaped by the people who have loved me, believed in me, challenged me, and held me through it all.

i am a mosaic of everyone i love, and everyone who loves me.

thank you for another year of reminding me who i am.
