✨ Living Heirlooms Studio: weaving family lore into everyday life
🌀 how do we become better ancestors today?

POSTS STORIES REELS TAGGED

This year, as part of our programming, we went to Manzanar Historic Site.
We are grateful to everyone who came with an open heart.

A very special thank you to our facilitators, Dr. Patricia Allyn Biggs and Mitch Homma, a direct descendant of Amache. Thank you for planning with us for nearly a year, sharing your knowledge and stories, and facilitating such a meaningful experience.
And a big shoutout to Dr. Lauren for leading our team with such a humble and generous heart.

And we went.

We saw.

We touched.

We paused.

For those few hours, we became witnesses to the experiences of Japanese Americans who were incarcerated here. Surrounded by mountains, inward pointing guns, rationed food, and the denial of belonging in a country many of them called home.

In times such as these, one’s humanity and dignity can become a question. Not because they are absent, but because they are deliberately denied.
And still, people planted gardens.
They built churches and schools.
They made art.
They created community.
They made beauty out of literal stones and found ways to make a life in a place designed to strip them of their dignity.

We witnessed not just the history of what happened here, but were gifted the responsibility of remembering.
Of listening.
Of being the candle bearers who carry these stories forward.

Thank you to everyone who came with us.
May we continue to go.

To see.

To listen.

To remember.

And to bear witness.

Even the Lord saw the suffering of His people in Egypt, heard their cries, and remembered them.

May & June Dump:

These past couple of months, I've been thinking a lot about self-esteem.

How it and confidence leads to a greater sense of agency, which is ultimately beneficial to oneself, the people in one's life, and society at large. Self esteem makes you more reliable to others.

Then there is trust and worthiness- Self-esteem is the believing that your perceptions, judgments, intuition and actions are worth trusting. This is earned trust.

It reduces the potential for resentment and passivity. Resentment flourishes when people perceive themselves as unable to make meaningful choices.

People can achieve greater interpersonal depth with one another when there is a foundation of healthy self-esteem. Where there is more self-esteem, there is greater alignment with one's values and greater truthfulness to oneself and others. Where there is more agency, there is more empowerment. More empowerment means more responsibility, and strong self-esteem makes that responsibility feel attractive instead of threatening.

Then there is physical agency in addition to psychological agency, both profound, powerful, and interconnected in such a way that they become almost indistinguishable.

I could not have anticipated that it would take me until 31 years of age to feel this kind of self-esteem.

One quote that has stayed with me is:

"Self-esteem is the reputation you have with yourself."

🌅 HALDIEEEEE ✌️ cultures, ☝️heartbeat. ☀️
Witnessing cousin David and Anica’s Haldi at the edge of Udaipur’s lake was pure bliss.

Between the vibrant dances, incredible food, and the golden hour setting over the water, it was a perfect immersion of tradition and joy 💞

A beautiful reminder that when we open our ♥️ to new traditions, we find a universal dance of grace. Grateful for the union of music, the laughter, and the food that connects us all.

Decades since my last choreographed dance, but David & Anica’s wedding under the enchanting full moon 🌕 deserved something special. 💃🏻✨

When Godma Mona asked me to join the performance very last minute, one practice just an hour before event the self-doubt kicked in. But instead of retreating, I chose to “dance with fear.” 🔓
No more overthinking—just pure connection and celebration with the family. What a beautiful breakthrough! Love you both, D&A 🥂🔥

Moments of Tradition 🫖✨

Deeply moved by the cultural threads woven into Anica & David’s wedding celebrations in Udaipur, 🇮🇳

From the tactile art of block printing and henna at the Raffles Batik Brunch to the quiet reverence of the Tea Ceremony, these moments were a powerful reminder of how heritage grounds us. It’s a beautiful thing to witness two families—and two cultures—becoming one.

Grateful to be part of this journey. congrats DnA (cousin David & Anica)

What do you hold as sacred, and how can you nourish your relationship with it?

“Holy Hotpot” is an embodied, communal feast welcoming you to sample and create your own rituals to re-member and connect with your sacred. Together, we’ll stir up the flavors we’ve inherited and learn ways to craft sacred practices that actually feel aligned with you — from pilgrimage, to altar-building, to the unexpected places the divine has always met you.

Come with open hands and an open palate, ready to receive and savor the gifts of what you hold holy. Leave with a rich bowl of ingredients seasoned to your life, that you can bring home to nourish your spiritual practice.

co-facilitated a creative/writing retreat in O'ahu at the start of the new year with @chrislynchoo, at @halmonipower’s generous invitation, bringing together old(er) friends from the Asian Diaspora Jam and new ones too. a week of conversations that nurture a new world, fermentation and fermenting/kimchi-ing, dismantling the archives of shame, writing, reading, napping and swimming. communing with the more-than-human. composting empire and birthing something altogether new and ancient.

[including borrowed words from conversations]: One of the miracles of being alive in this life time is finding my people, over and over again. Kindred who share this vision for the world, of bringing wholeness back to the broken, of wanting to stitch our parts back together so we stop living in our shadow, driven by shame that is inherited and shame that is our own. Our rivers meet here, at this singular moment in time, so that our waters have the gift of mingling together. But tomorrow we'll each be altogether different rivers. Our softness is the softness than can carve mountains. We will traverse each the continents we come from, and the ones that our great-grandparents, grandparents, parents, ourselves, and our children journey through, flowing into the sea that meets all of our shores.
