Nine years ago today, THE LEGO NINJAGO MOVIE came out.

The whole thing happened ridiculously fast.

The same team I’d worked with on THE LEGO BATMAN MOVIE called and basically said, “Hey, can you write something for the end credits of Ninjago?”

I sent them a track and a hook. They came back with, “Great. We love it. Finish the song in two days because the movie has to be locked.”

So I called my friend Jeff Lewis.

Jeff wrote the verses, the insane character-introduction section and the “Dance of Doom,” we finished the song, sent it off, and about a month later we were sitting in a theater watching “Found My Place” play over the end credits on the big screen.

Of all the things I’ve done in music, this is still one of the things people mention to me the most. Authors I interview will say, “My kids LOVE your LEGO Ninjago song. We play it in our house all the time.”

Which is hilarious because it’s technically my less popular LEGO song.

It’s also the better one.

Happy 9 years to “Found My Place,” co-written with the great Jeff Lewis, and to THE LEGO NINJAGO MOVIE. 🥷

Apparently this is my legacy.

My publisher called me one day and asked, “Do you know anything about the Twilight books?”

Do I?

Team Edward all the way!!

They were looking for an end-credit song for The Twilight Saga: Eclipse, so I called my high school buddy Rob Kleiner and we wrote a song in a day.

My manager hated it.

My publisher loved it.

48 hours later CeeLo Green had recorded it. A few weeks later it was in the end credits of one of the biggest movies in the world.

The song was “What Part of Forever.”

It debuted at number two, went gold, and earned me my first Grammy nomination.

Which I lost.

So yes, reading books changes lives. Sometimes it also leads directly to a gold record and a Grammy loss.

16 years ago, the Twilight: Eclipse soundtrack came out.

I read the book, wrote “What Part of Forever,” CeeLo Green sang it, and somehow it ended up playing over the end credits.

Gold record. Grammy nomination. Very normal book club behavior.

Anyway, I’m still not over it. 🐺🩸📚

To celebrate my birthday, I wrote myself a theme song.

Because if I don’t celebrate me, who will?

Getting old is a gift!!

What if Project Hail Mary had an original theme song?

I wrote one with my boy Jeff Lewis. It’s called “Out There.”

Cuz some books deserve more than a review.
