For French-Lebanese painter Christine Safa, painting is a way of holding onto the moments she never wants to forget.

Moving between her studio outside Paris and her family's native Beirut, Safa draws from the landscapes, people, and memories that shape her life. A dog appears among sunflowers. Rooftops become mountains. The Mediterranean emerges from the view outside her window. In her paintings, the familiar becomes something almost otherworldly.

Her latest exhibition, Noces, takes its name from Albert Camus' writings on the Mediterranean and brings together intimate portraits, sun-drenched landscapes, and fragments of everyday life. Beneath their dreamlike surfaces is a deeply personal desire to preserve the beauty of the present, even when the past feels impossible to escape.

As Safa puts it, “It’s everyday poetry.”

Closes October 24 in NYC.

Her painting focuses on moments and places charged with emotion, that memory has retained. Using a warm palette that acknowledges its Mediterranean origins, her work focuses on what remains present, simply but fully.

“I try to anchor myself and be at peace and make everything coexist and layer on my paintings.

While I have fear and worries, I try to focus on what the light chooses to enhance and show me. It’s everyday poetry - la poésie d’un quotidien - what I see everyday, what I try to remember for ever.” – Christine Safa, writing for Noces, Summer 2026

Christine Safa’s exhibition trails the heels of summer and captures the sensations and energies of this season. Her signature application of thin layers of pure pigments, built upon fresco-like surfaces, here accrue into vignettes and morsels of time elapsed under hot suns, across lapping seas. The artist’s time spent in the Mediterranean–researching Italian churches, revisiting her home city of Beirut, and returning to her studio in France–are rendered into nearly iconographic, yet deeply personal, vistas. A friction of energies (figures emerging and receding, landscapes trapped in near dissolution) mirror the reconciliation of these sites as both political and metaphysical

A question hovers across Safa’s work: how does the entirety of a memory become a singular image? Like the sea, her paintings suggest unity via an oscillation of settling and disappearing. The chorus of recurring characters are the artist’s family and home: her husband, her pet, the view from her window. Safa renders them haloed by rainbows and coronated by sunflowers, ascending in status into the divine. The heavenly here is not nearly an allusion–it is an insistence on the sacred bond between mankind and earth grasped and affirmed through love.

This is the last week to see Christine Safa: Noces, on view through October 24.

Christine Safa builds her paintings through a process that emphasizes texture, material, and the physicality of the surface. Preparing her canvases with rabbit-skin glue and marble powder, Safa creates a thick, matte, absorbent ground into which pigments sink. Before the paint dries, she sometimes carves into the surface, treating it like stone to evoke the texture of frescoes and the relief of sculptural forms.

See Safa in Noces before it closes this week. For more information on the artist’s solo exhibition at the gallery, please visit the link in our bio.

Between memory and light, @christinesafa finds poetry in the everyday.

In Noces, her latest exhibition at Bortolami in New York, Safa explores the search for peace through intimate landscapes, shifting skies, and the quiet rhythms of daily life. Birds, rooftops, treetops, and fleeting glimpses of the sea become recurring motifs, transforming familiar surroundings into reflections on memory, belonging, and the delicate coexistence of fear and serenity.

As Safa writes, “la poésie d’un quotidien” an attempt to hold on to the beauty of what we see every day.

Through layered compositions and luminous colors, her paintings capture the tension between uncertainty and stillness, revealing how ordinary moments can become a source of grounding and renewal.

Noces is on view at Bortolami, 39 Walker Street, New York, through October 24, 2026.
