POSTS STORIES REELS TAGGED

15 years with Fred 🥹 Our lover boy has gone to meet his best brother Artie on the other side 🤎 The one who hugged any person on the street who would let him (I’m talking paws wrapped tight around your neck in full embrace), reluctantly modelled in an ad campaign (but got a decent pay-check out of it!), the one who always took care of his brother (and made sure he followed the rules). Hands down the greatest cuddler (and French kisser). And the best big brother to Vivien (he was game for it ALL!) We will miss our wise boy dearly. The end of an era 🤎

Nothing wrong with a movie tie-in cover but the original is almost always better…

Saying goodbye is hard, but @christopher_brand and I are so grateful for our 14 years with our handsome boy, Artie 🤎 not only was he a great lover and doting brother to Fred and Vivien, he also had an accomplished career (!)—published in a poetry book, modelled in an ad campaign featured in taxis and Columbus Circle, and was even an extra on Dogs in the City. People stopped us everywhere we went because he was cooler than cool. Love you so much sweet boy! You are sorely missed.

Today is the day!! 🥂💃🏻 If I could go back and tell my thirty-year-old self one thing, it would be this: it’s those risks you take, and the courage you have to take them, that will be the making of your life. Be Ready When the Luck Happens is now available in bookstores. I hope you love it.

Swipe for behind the scenes of the cover photo shoot!

I don’t think anyone could read this book and not have a lot to say.

LOOKING BACK💭📖: One of my favorite aspects of “The Vegetarian” is the storytelling. Han Kang brilliantly splits this book into what feels like three separate stories, yet they are so perfectly connected and intertwined. Chef’s kiss! There is a lot to be said about this short read. With such brevity and clear diction, Kang does not spare you. This book is, at times, grotesque, sexual, abusive, and haunting. On the surface, it can seem simply about what one is choosing not to eat, but it’s so much more about autonomy, specifically a woman’s, and patriarchy.

The book is also about one’s freedom, the freedom of choice, and the offense others take when someone exercises it outside of social norms. There is a tangible level of fear, discomfort, and suspense in each story that lingers into the next. The violent nature in which those around Yeong-hye are determined to strip her choice away, viewing her as insane or as an object to be controlled, is horrifying. Her decision is either weaponized or sexualized, bringing either pleasure or pain to others, but it couldn’t just be her own.

The perception of insanity and how fickle one’s idea of self can be shifted is shown in characters like her sister and the sister’s husband. The relationship with her sister is one of complexity. Though Yeong-hye’s voice is only in heard in her nightmares, Kang beautifully depicts the levels of obligation, duty, pain, and sorrow through these women. This book so plainly and artfully displays isolation, conviction, and the nature of control, especially when it comes to women’s decisions and bodies. I found I was unable to put this book down once I picked it up.

This book definitely comes with a trigger warning and will make many readers uncomfortable, but it will undoubtedly spark conversation and thought.

BEST COVERS OF 2023
•

I guess it’s time for some of my best of the year content. Starting with covers. Yes, baby, I 100% am judging the books by the covers. Sue me.
•
•
Here’s what I’ve learned about my taste in covers. I like a minimal cover. I like a photo. Apparently I like a rich white man. Give me gross or dangerous or haunting and I am in. I do not care for a floral or paint blobs. I want realistic. I want striking.

What are some of your best covers of 2023?
•
•
I did my best to tag the cover artists where I could (some ARCs don’t list and most pubs don’t make this information easy to find online, frustratingly). This year I started tracking cover artists and have learned I have faves. So shoutout to the people/teams who make our books pretty on the outside.

This came out in June, so a little late to posting! (art inspired by a paid collage artist’s work that alas needed to be reshot due to model release issues.) To the rescue: 📸 @christopher_brand and model @limone26 🤎🤎 #luckydogs #helenschulman #alfredaknopf
