EPICLESIS ‘Montage’ A collection of stills from our short film. Four years ago, I started writing a short film script with my friend Jesse Loncraine about growing up in a religious environment and trying to fit into the “normal world”—especially through the lens of romantic longing. EPICLESIS is a satirical comedy about a priest looking for love in the modern world. I wanted to explore the absurd and darkly humorous aspects of this experience, as they felt true to a part of my early years. In 2021, we were preparing to shoot in Ukraine, just a few months after filming MOEDER, which had been such a great experience. But then the war broke out, and we tabled the film indefinitely. Last year, I revisited the script again and thought, “this story still resonates with me...” so we got to work…and adapted it for NYC. Thankful for an amazing team that made it happen. More soon!

WE NEED YOUR HELP AND WOULD APPRECIATE YOUR SUPPORT. We’ve launched a Crowdfunding Campaign for our short film EPICLESIS. This film is very close to my heart, and although it’s a darker comedy, it deals with themes (of belonging, fitting in, cultural & relational dislocation) that I’ve wrestle with as a missionary kid, and as someone who is trying to find his place in the world, yet at the same time, recognizing his inherited place in the world as something handed down, or bestowed to him in a Cosmic, Divine sense already - from birth. It’s a film about a priest looking for love - leaving his life of chosen celibacy, trying to fill a God-shaped hole with human shapes. It explores the awkwardness of giving up his spiritual identity and trading it for what the cool kids wear - an ill-fitting Adidas tracksuit, as he navigates all the pitfalls of modern dating: the apps, speed-dating, judgmental church folk etc. We’re 100% making the film - shooting next week, in NYC. We’re making it for 140K and shooting for 6 days. We’ve already shot day 1/6, and have a little teaser out already. ALSO —- We’ve got a rave scene that we could use some people for - if you want to hang, and have a good time shooting on 35mm film, reach out to @laurentarber, and I’ll send through more details shortly. “The idea of the PSA (Monte Nido “Hidden”) was to use the game of hide and seek as a metaphor. Over a countdown, we see different characters hiding their eating disorders. Director @haya_wsm and I wanted to use this idea as an anchor for the visual approach, particularly with composition and camera movement. We wanted the characters to feel as though they were alluding to the camera’s view, disappearing around corners just as we push through a doorway, seen at a distance through reflections, and partially obscured by their environments. We stayed mostly on the longer end of our lens set to help conceal the characters, allowing faces to be cut off by the edges of the frame. I chose the ARRICAM LT because of its size and reliability. The LT is one of the finest 35mm sync sound cameras ever made. I love it because I can depend on it - I can think less about technical, and more on keeping my mind open and focused on what Haya needed in the scene. A special shout out to @dina_the_oracle at ARRI Rental Toronto for always showing unwavering support. Twelve years ago today, the fourth most powerful earthquake ever recorded struck Japan. The ensuing tsunami claimed nearly 25,000 lives and displaced hundreds of thousands more. Yuko Takamatsu was among those swept away on 3/11. She has never been found. Since that day, her husband Yasuo has dedicated his life to searching for her. He scoured the Japanese coast until he decided there was only one place left where Yuko could be: the ocean. Every weekend for the past decade, Yasuo has explored the depths of the Pacific, diving into the void to find her. Yasuo’s search is a meditative practice, an act of grieving, a way to stay close to Yuko’s memory, and an effort to honor the love they shared. His commitment has been steadfast since we first spoke about making this film in 2016 — he says that he will continue to search for her “as long as his body allows.” I’m so grateful that he trusted me to tell his story with The Diver. I’m thankful for Sarah Brannan @madewithtrust for believing in the project and supporting me unequivocally throughout the process; @airi.okam.yam and Mt. “Film has been a part of @haya_wsm and I's collaboration since the very beginning. We think it looks the best. One of the most gratifying experiences of shooting this film was the reaction of our young cast. All of the kids in the film were found on social media days before shooting. None had any acting experience. When they arrived on set, Haya would talk with them and walk them through the feeling the scene was meant to communicate. Then we'd walk around the room to find the frame. Once blocking was finalised, we'd walk in the camera, and their faces would light up. They couldn't believe they were being shot on film.
