October is LGBTQ History Month. 🌈

All of our families stand on those who came before us. Real dads, books, even Sesame Street.

➡️ Swipe to learn gay dad history they didn’t teach us

On Oct. 14, 1979, the first National March on Washington for Lesbian and Gay Rights brought together an estimated 100,000 people fighting for equality.

It was also where three leaders of local gay dad groups met in person for the first time: Alan Ross (Philadelphia), Dave Berube (D.C.) and Al Luongo (New York).

After the march, they decided to bring gay dads together nationally. In February 1980, dads gathered at Ross’s home in Philadelphia and founded the Gay Fathers Coalition.

The group welcomed lesbian moms in 1986 and is now @familyequality.

In May 1983, Life magazine published “The Double Closet,” a 12-page feature on gay dads.

Until then, Life had never used the word “gay” or featured anyone as LGBTQ+.

‘Daddy’s Roommate’ by Michael Willhoite, published in 1990, was the first children’s book to feature two gay men as parents. It follows a young boy whose divorced dad now lives with his partner, Frank.

The book was heavily challenged throughout the 1990s, and the American Library Association listed it as the most contested book of 1993 and 1994.

Willhoite also wrote a sequel, Daddy’s Wedding. The 1996 book follows the same family, with the boy serving as best man at his dad’s commitment ceremony.

In 2012, gay dads Alejandro Grinblat and Carlos Gustavo Dermgerd were both listed on the birth certificate of their son, Tobías. It was the first time an Argentine birth certificate named two men as parents.

Argentina was the first Latin American country to legalize gay marriage.

Tobías was born through a surrogate in India, because Argentine law didn’t address surrogacy at all, which left families like theirs in a legal gray area.

In 2021, Sesame Street introduced its first family with two dads in a “Family Day” episode released during Pride Month.

Dads Frank and Dave arrived with their daughter, Mia, and it was the first time the show featured a married gay couple in its 51-year history.

MY GLO, MY LOVE, MY ALWAYS - thank you for choosing me, loving me, and surprising me every day. I promise to not only reflect your loving light, my little hummingbird, but shine right next to you through every moment. I am grateful we get to grow together and celebrate life together. You really did that! The gayest, most New York memory that I will keep safe at the bottom of my heart. A beautiful day surrounded by dear friends, strangers cheering all around, even someone blowing bubbles, and an impromptu toast at beatbox. Cher playing in the background of our video - iconic. AHHHH! Te amo, papi 💗

GRATEFUL MY HEART IS BEATING #queerjoy

A post from 2021! Thought I would reshare because it brings me such joy. “Sesame Street has always been a welcoming place of diversity and inclusion. So I'm so excited to introduce Nina's Brother Dave, his husband Frank, and their daughter Mia to our sunny street. Our Family Day episode drops today on HBOMax and on YouTube(https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Iph6Sj44Zpo.) I am so honored and humbled to have co-directed this important and milestone episode. Love is love, and we are so happy to add this special family to our Sesame family. Happy Pride to all!!!! “
