Every now and then I get a call for something that seems fairly simple on the surface, but in reality is much more difficult than it looks. This was the case this year when my buddy and Creative Director for Matsuda Eyewear Chris Greco gave me a call to shoot motion control for their new website. They wanted interactive content that would show off all the angles of their eyewear in one simple shot that would play in the background of their online store. I was thrilled at the opportunity to dive in only to learn that we were going to have to shoot Matsuda’s whole catalogue, around 450 pairs of eyewear in one and a half days! That’s one pair every 25 seconds to complete the lot.

We took the layout and design considerations of the online store into account, making the white backdrop a specific color code of off white and overlaying the text and selection menus of the site alongside the shot. I accomplished this by taking a monitor and displaying the correct color code from photoshop and taking both a meter and color reading of the monitor and matching the cyc both in stop and kelvin to the monitor on set. For the layout considerations prod printed a transparency of the website UI and I taped it to monitor to see how the shot would play online.
For motion control we turned to Camera Control Systems. Simon has been a great collaborator in the past and makes the process of motion control simple. We decided to shoot 12 FPS at a 90 degree shutter and run the move slower so we wouldn’t introduce any motion blur and give the shots an almost CG feel. Acquisition was on a red helium 8K camera with a 50mm master prime; we shot at a 5.6-8 to keep the whole head in focus.
My lighting and grip crew Mark Ramsey and Julien Janigo helped get as many reflections as we could find, given that the camera was moving all over the place. My camera ninja Holly Horne came in to help make sure camera worked flawlessly, taking measurements, readings and diagrams of the whole set.
This job was a great example of all the different aspects of problem solving and creative thinking that go into cinematography as a whole. Thanks to everyone involved for helping bring this shot to life!

Happy birthday to my hubby today! Here is one of my fave pics of him (with his bro @skisgen). This was taken BK (before kids) and shortly after he relaunched @matsudaeyewear by the talented @christophergrecostudio #mancrushmonday #seemslikeyesterday

This is a shot from one of the coolest projects I’ve worked on as a finisher & digital painter. This was shot by @christophergrecostudio in infrared for @matsudaeyewear ‘s 50th anniversary book. We worked some serious hours in post processing to get these dialed in to the look that Chris envisioned. I painted atmospheric haze, fog, lighting effects and various background elements. Color grading and prepress was critical for this project. Wasn’t an easy task but it turned out amazing.
