Recovering from the weekend of all weekends, another whirlwind adventure at HSB in San Francisco. Infectious joy, incredible music, and countless beloveds gathered together to celebrate life and art and the interconnectedness of it all. Amidst such pain in the world I’m so eternally grateful for these moments of light and beauty and the vibrant side of humanity that still shines through ❤️

So many knew and loved Joe Ely through his music, the voice the stories, the legend.
But to me, Joe was family. Sharon and Marie and he became that long before I even understood or knew his music. I remember finally seeing him at the Saxon Pub and coming back and telling everyone how good he was, the biggest understatement, I know. I adore that Jude and Roman, born Texans, are finding their own way into Texas music and are now discovering and loving his music now, it’s as if the songs just keep traveling, and he is here with us.

No, I knew him aside from that as the best family man, a steady presence and a loving father and devoted husband The kind of man who didn’t just write about life but built one that held people. We spent so many big, beautiful Thanksgivings together, and Christmases in Taos, and dinners in the kitchen out in the country.

These first photographs were taken in Taos in November. I didn’t know it would be the last time I’d see him, but that day was special and good, and I’m so deeply grateful for it.

Today is Sharon and his wedding anniversary, and we will celebrate his life under the oak tree, a life rooted in love, in music, in family.

I love you so very much, Joe.
You showed me what a steady, loving family man could be.
I love you so very much, Sharon and Marie and Christopher 🤍
Today and forever, we hold you close.
See you under the oak tree.

One year ago, under the biggest desert sky outside Marfa, officiated with style and love by @tinariveraofficial witnessed by the closest, two of the most beautiful souls ever promised each other a life…and it was just perfect!

Ari, you were so radiant, and Dallas, steady, and quietly smiling constantly and so happy.
I love your love, and I love you both so very much: Happiest anniversary ❤️this one is true!
