One of the hardest things I faced as a young photographer was shooting group shots. I would get a case of the nerves and stomach aches the night before the shoot at the thought of dealing with a large group of actors and actresses. I was obsessed with getting the poses and positions right and always looking to the greats for inspiration, especially Annie Leibovitz and her incredible group assemblies for Vanity Fair. Now as a seasoned professional I still get some nerves, but I never back down from large group compositions. In order to get good at group shots, you need to shoot as many as possible while under pressure to master the logistics and rhythm of creating. A hot tip is to use stand-ins to mock up and light the shot in advance before the big names arrive. This is your chance to fine-tune body positions and dial in the mood and feel for the lighting.
It takes a small army of talented creatives from art directors, producers, photo agents, creative directors, stylist teams, hair & make up, glam, set designers, photo assistants, retouchers, digi techs, seamstress, publicists, show runners, studio executives and more to produce these image campaigns successfully.
