@emilykordovich Takeover, Part 1: When Your Skills And Your Taste Meet, And How That’s A Never Ending Cycle

Hot take: You have to heal from your own trauma to find clarity as a storyteller and grow as an artist.

I’m starting out hot here, okay? There’s that quote about the gap between taste and skill, and how hard it is for artists to bridge that gap in the beginning. This gap brings out our insecurities, our imposter syndrome, that constant fear of failing thus not taking risks, and even our deepest traumas. Honestly, some people never make it past this and take it out on everyone. Uncool!

My thesis film at @rittigers ELENA, which I directed and DP’d (featured here), was on 16mm and this was the first time my skills and taste met. I felt like we nailed the look I had envisioned. Imagine if people saw my potential and hired me with real budgets.

Wasn’t the case. Tldr; I freelanced for the first year in NYC, and my self worth was attached to how little money I was making and what I was working on. On projects I did shoot, I didn’t have access to crew or gear, and didn’t make any work that met my new standards. I fell into a deep depression.

Turns out what I needed was ego death 😅

Long story short: At my full time job later, the work I made didn’t align with me, and I was able to separate the work from myself. Once I was laid off, I said yes to shooting every project that came my way, and learned how to be a real indie filmmaker: Making things with no budget that look good.

Through this process I was able to shamelessly try and fail at things, make crew relationships, and forge rental house connections. Experimenting with lenses & gear especially changed everything for me.

The spec Apple: Jellyfish, was made with $1500. I was so proud of how parts of this looked.

This helped me get to my next phase. @nicholasjmarchetti produced the spec, and from seeing me work with nothing, he asked me to shoot his film called, ‘You Mourn Weird.’ This was the first short I shot with a real budget.

The films featured today were turning points, the earliest meetings of skill & taste. These all set a strong foundation for what came next. Project details in comments 😊

@emilykordovich taking over @cinematographysalon for the week! Thanks @dkruta for creating this community that we’ve all learned so much from. I’m very honored to get this opportunity.

I’m a (mostly) narrative DP based in Brooklyn, NY. My fun fact is I’ve shot 45 short films & counting. Of course I am working towards breaking into narrative features & TV, but I am so grateful to have been trusted with so many people’s stories ❤️

If you’re looking for condors & cranes, this may not be the week for you. I’ll be sharing what the journey of an indie DP early in their career actually looks like, how one builds their taste & philosophies, and sharing the films I shot that I learned the most from.

I’ve been freelancing as a DP (more or less) the last four years, and shot my first feature last year. I’m proud to be part of the ICF*C, and the ASC Vision Mentorship program in ’23-24 with Patti Lee, ASC @pattiplumtree as my mentor. I’m so grateful for the huge impact she had on building my confidence as a DP.

Prior to that, I was a producer/shooter for Food & Wine until I was laid off in 2022. I did go to film school at @ritsofa @rittigers & I studied Cinematography & Ad Photography. Double majoring was nuts, but those late nights in the photo studio taught me how light works. I’d say that is a unique quality of mine as a DP who came up in camera dept otherwise.

Even now, a lot of my world view is shaped by growing up an outsider in the small town I’m from. My family was from Macedonia, and I never really felt accepted, so I escaped to all kinds of storytelling. As an emotionally sensitive kid, I needed an outlet for all these feelings, so I did music, attempted art, even tried writing a novel, learned photography from my dad, & finally landed at acting. This was the gateway to filmmaking.

Being a sensitive kid felt like a weakness for many years, but when I found film, it became a strength. Having compassion and empathy, I believe, makes for a great DP. You can better understand the nuances of each story, empathize with the characters in a film, and better care for your crew.

Plenty more thoughts, breakdowns, and hot takes to share this week, so stay tuned 🤠
