“Don’t leave us behind”

On World Day for Assistive Technology we are delighted to launch “Don’t Leave Us Behind”. A new film series highlighting the impact of AI’s Language Gap.

As the world races toward an AI-driven future millions with slurred or difficult-to-understand speech are being “left out of the algorithm”. The Centre for Digital Language Inclusion (CDLI) led by University College London’s (UCL) Global Disability Innovation Hub (GDI Hub) is harnessing the power of AI to develop pioneering automatic speech recognition (ASR) solutions for impaired speech. By collecting and sharing impaired speech data while training AI models to recognise impaired speech the centre is building speech recognition for everyone.
Award winning Witness Studios joined the CDLI in Ghana to capture intimate and poetic portraits of people who have the most to gain from inclusive research, yet currently find their voices categorised as “noise” by standard technology 👀

With support from Google.org, the UK International Development funded AT2030 programme, and Hogan Lovells, the centre has captured 13 languages across 5 countries and 2 continents, democratising access for all and building a wider movement to enable people with non-standard speech to communicate in their language of choice.🤩

World Day for Assistive Technology is an annual celebration on the 4th June, that champions the importance of assistive technology (AT) to increase access and raise awareness, especially in low- and middle-income countries. 👨‍🦽‍➡️

Took my friend Chris to his first professional football game today. Although Fulham didn’t win, we both jumped out of our seats a couple of times when Fulham came close. ⚽️ Chris 50 something in a black t shirt and bangle bracelets is pointing with his thumb behind him. Simon 50 something with a pale green zip sweat top and white tee is smiling excitedly. Behind them some football fans and then fulham football team on the green pitch playing Bournemouth. The score board shows 0-1 to Bournemouth.
