Actor-director Muhammad Musthafa, who made his directorial debut with the 2020 film Kappela, shifts the spotlight from the slightly familiar faces and opts for an entirely new cast of fresh talent in the lead roles for his second, Mura. Instead of the usual gangster locales of Kochi, Mura immerses itself in the rawness of Trivandrum. The film is centered around four young men - Anandhu (Hridhu Haroon), Saji (Jobin Das), Manu (Yedhukrishnan) and Manaf (Anujith Kannan) - who, driven by the lure of power and quick money, willingly enter the world of Ani (Suraj Venjaramoodu), a local gangster. They soon begin to realize the true dangers of their impulsive choices with the consequences of their actions shaping the rest of the plot.

Written by Suresh Babu, who seem to have thoroughly researched the city and its local gangs, bring a refreshing authenticity to the story through the city. This is evident in every detail, from the dialect to the small nuances used to push the narrative forward. Even the casting of Suraj Venjaramood feels like an inspired choice, as he perfectly captures the gritty, no-nonsense essence of the character. The city's dialect is used in its most unfiltered form and not for comedic effect (finally!!!), but to add depth and realism to the film.

Suraj plays Ani so naturally, opting for a restrained approach. With his dialogues kept to a minimum, he allows Ani's nuanced expressions and body language to take the centre stage, strengthening his character's presence. Hridhu is the true star here, with Jobin not far behind. It is exciting to see such impressive performances from newcomers.

The action sequences (P C Stunts) are simply seamless. They grow into the narrative slowly and steadily forming an integral part of the storytelling. The sequences are intense and bone-crushing, mostly consisting of relentless hand to hand combat that is absolutely thrilling to watch on the big screen. As the film progress, so does the violence, especially in the second half. The music (Christy Joby) and editing (Chaman Chakko) are deserving of much praise for how well it boosts the overall experience of this modest film.
