On Wednesday, October 21st, all 250 participants in our after-school program, along with staff, parents, and caregivers, joined the "Next Steps for School Food: 200 Laps for Another $200 Million" initiative calling on the federal government to double their investment into the National School Food Program and match the $400 million already invested by provinces.

While walking the combined 200 laps around their school's gym and yard, students shared thoughts about their favourite food, their love of growing vegetables in the summer, and their dreams for what school food could look like.

We hope these collective efforts help build momentum toward a stronger, more inclusive National School Food Program, reaching many more children and families across Canada. 💚

Still smiling about yesterday! Brenda Moore and Emma Cox from our team were on Parliament Hill as Brent Mansfield ran all 200 laps for the Next Steps for School Food run.

School food helps kids feel nourished, focused and ready to learn, and we’re asking for more funding so it can reach even more children and youth across Canada.

Thank you again to Brent, Coalition for Healthy School Food, Nutrition for Learning, Mark Gerretsen, and everyone who showed up. It was a great day!

What a day in Ottawa! Brenda Moore, and Emma Cox from our Food Sharing Project team were on Parliament Hill to cheer on Brent Mansfield as he completed all 200 laps for the Next Steps for School Food run.

We also brought 400 postcards from students in our region, each one telling the Prime Minister why school food matters to them. More funding means more kids across Canada can start their day nourished and ready to learn.

Thank you, Brent, for every lap, and thank you to the Coalition for Healthy School Food, Nutrition for Learning, Mark Gerretsen, and everyone who joined. We’re proud to be part of it!

𝟮𝟬𝟬 𝗹𝗮𝗽𝘀. 𝗢𝗻𝗲 𝗶𝗺𝗽𝗼𝗿𝘁𝗮𝗻𝘁 𝗴𝗼𝗮𝗹. On October 21st, Vancouver teacher and school food advocate, Brent Mansfield, will return to Ottawa to run 200 laps on Parliament Hill to celebrate the establishment of Canada's National School Food Program and advocate for its continued growth.

And students can make their voices heard, too! Schools, teachers and families are invited to download, print and colour a postcard, with students sharing what school food means to them and their hopes for the future. Completed postcards can be mailed to ONFE, where they will help amplify student voices as part of this national advocacy effort.

We see firsthand the difference access to nutritious food makes in students' ability to learn, grow and thrive. Join us on October 21, run, walk or cheer Brent on, and send in a postcard to help champion a healthier future for students across Canada.

Thank you to everyone who joined us at Eastdale CI to visit Toronto’s largest rooftop school garden. 💚

It was a pleasure to show off what’s possible when students, teachers, and community partners grow, cook, and share food together.

CNCM dietitians sit on several different committees to support the work they do with school food programs. One of these committees is the Coalition for Healthy School Food - the largest school food network in Canada. The success of Canada’s National School Food Program is the result of the grassroots advocacy of the Coalition’s 500+ members and endorsers who worked to change the conversation around school food over the past decade.

Ontario invests just 9 cents per student, per day in Student Nutrition Programs, and that amount hasn’t increased since 2014.

With 1 in 4 children in Ontario experiencing food insecurity, 9 cents simply isn’t enough.

We believe #9CentsIsNonsense.

Visit www.foodsharingproject.org/9-cents-is-nonsense/ or go to the linktree in my bio to learn more and access a template letter to contact your local MPP and advocate for increased investment in Student Nutrition Programs.

🍎 As schools wind down this week, we’re looking back on Year 6 of School Fuel and how far this program has come.

This school year we delivered over 250,000 servings (2 items per serving!) to 30 schools in Orillia and area. With 1 in 3 children facing food insecurity, having healthy food at school, no strings attached, matters more than ever. 💚

We were also fortunate to receive federal funding through United Way to purchase a new refrigerated truck for deliveries 🚚, add storage racking, and outfit schools with fridges, freezers, and food prep equipment, 🔪🥒 so they can do even more for their students.

A huge shoutout 📣 to Uptergrove Public School for the heartwarming thank you card they presented to our delivery team, Wayne and Jim, who made sure to pass the love along to the volunteers who pick and pack orders every Monday morning. 🙌

The school year may be ending, but the need doesn’t take a break, and neither will we. The research is clear: nutritious food fuels focus 🧠, energy ⚡, and growth 🌱, everything a young person needs to learn and thrive. We’re not slowing down anytime soon. 💪

This week marked a significant milestone for Canada’s food sector.

The release of Canada’s first National Food Security Strategy reflects a growing recognition that food security is closely connected to economic resilience, domestic production, innovation, supply chain strength, and long-term competitiveness.

Many of these same themes are intentionally reflected throughout the Food Forward Summit agenda, from food sovereignty and market resilience to AI adoption, investment, trade diversification, and workforce development.

The strategy sets a direction. The next challenge is turning vision into action.

What priority do you believe will have the greatest impact on Canada’s food future?
