A closer look at my most recent mural for @muraljam (along with some in process photos). Can’t wait to do more large scale work like this!

What do call a body with two torsos, three arms, four hands, and two and half legs?

@chuckaintnobody immediately understood the purpose of Mural Jam and the genuine connection that comes from creating alongside others. So much so that he became an advocate for pumping this cohort up with three additional artists (Jill, Solly, & Dave). Chuck’s piece demonstrates a mastery of figure in perhaps the most unconventional mashup conceivable. Thanks for coming out and bringing your friends into the fold. #crocsandtocs #birria #muraljam #utahartist Muralist figure painting.

Do visual artists gravitate towards individual sports?

Or is what we’re noticing a result of a confirmation or selection bias?

An article on Alma Allen last week mentioned his skateboarding, which was on our mind when we ran into Jared Steffensen, who is exhibiting deconstructed and reconstructed skate decks at @onemodernart this Saturday. That got us thinking and looking around, and we started seeing a lot of skateboarders out there—see our article, “The Skate-to-Art Pipeline,” at 15bytes.com.

Steffensen saw some similarities that naturally pull the two activities— skateboarding and art—together. Focusing on an individual activity while in a community, being one.

Like a herd of cats, which kind of describes artists.

Is skiing another one? An individual sport that attracts artists? Are there just as many skier-artists in our community? (or maybe were there, before skiing became so expensive). Or might it only seem so since if you’re a skier and an artist you would gravitate towards Utah, like say @jcjacobs5 did several decades ago when he came to Weber State? Ditto a sport like mountain biking. If you can recognize them beneath the helmets and glasses, you'll run into lots of visual artists out there on the trails.

By this logic do musicians, who by necessity need to work together, gravitate towards team sports?

Does the Utah symphony have a softball team?

What are your anecdotal, totally-non-scientific thoughts?
