Dark skies, the Milky Way, and a few thousand people exploring the Universe together. We had a great weekend at the Great Basin Astronomy Festival, sharing telescopes, science talks, astrophotography, and astronomy with visitors from across the country. We even hosted an Astronomy on Tap.

Thanks to Great Basin National Park for having us! See you next year!

How have ground-based telescopes transformed our view of the Universe? How have we gone from the early telescopes used by Galileo to the enormous observatories astronomers use today? We recently hosted Caltech astronomer Kaitlyn Shin to discuss the history and science of ground-based telescopes at Astronomy on Tap.

It was our biggest event so far, with 500+ attendees, and one lucky trivia winner even went home with a telescope! Kaitlyn's presentation is now up on YouTube (link in bio):

Last month, we teamed up with Lassen Volcanic National Park for Dark Skies at Lassen, a weekend of stargazing and science under some of California's darkest skies! We had great weather, beautiful views, and lots of astronomy throughout the weekend.

We're looking forward to doing it all again this coming weekend at Great Basin and Sequoia National Parks. Hope to see some of you under the stars!

Our Dark Sky Festivals feature astronomy lectures along with Q&A and demonstrations from current Caltech astrophysicists, several huge telescopes with operators pointing them for you, daytime solar viewing, fresh astro-pics that we capture downloaded straight to your phone, camping onsite under dark skies on our private property just west of Death Valley, free Starlink WiFi courtesy of SpaceX, a food truck, giveaways, and more!

See the links in our bio, and join us for a unique stargazing experience! ✨

What can an x-ray view of the sky tell us about dark energy and how the universe has evolved over billions of years? Last month we hosted Esra Bulbul, the lead cosmologist working on the eROSITA x-ray mission, to discuss the mission and relevant science at our Astronomy on Tap event. She just received the American Astronomical Society's High Energy Astrophysics Division Mid-Career Prize.

What goes on inside of a star cluster? What happens to black holes that form there? We recently hosted Professor Kyle Kremer to describe the extreme conditions in these dense environments and their consequences. Kyle was awarded with the prestigious Helen Warner prize from the American Astronomical Society for his research on this topic. His talk is now up on our YouTube channel (link in bio):
