In the church at Sainte-Marie-du-Mont, Normandy, the shrine of Sainte Thérèse of Lisieux still carries a bullet hole in its glass — from June 1944.

The Germans used this church as a military post. After D-Day, American troops held their first church service here. The bullet holes in the confessional, the shrapnel in the pulpit, and this one above Sainte Thérèse — they left them all exactly as they were.

Paratroopers, the Virgin Mary - can you name the location of this church in Normandy?

In this window, the Virgin Mary holds the Christ Child and looks down over a burning town while American paratroopers drift through the night sky beneath her. The window was designed by Paul Renaud, who was only 10 years old when the 82nd Airborne dropped into his town.

Below the image, a French inscription dedicates it to those whose courage and sacrifice liberated Sainte-Mère-Église and France.

Eighty-two years later, the people of this town still haven’t forgotten. Neither will we.

June 1944. In a small church at Angoville-au-Plain, two American medics — Robert Wright and Kenneth Moore — treated every wounded man carried through the door, American and German alike. Then a mortar round punched through the roof, hit the stone floor... and never exploded. Some call it luck. The men inside called it something else.
