📍St Mary's Church, Astbury, Congleton, Cheshire 🏴󠁧󠁢󠁥󠁮󠁧󠁿
•
Quoted as being one of Cheshire's finest medieval churches; Simon Jenkins gave St Mary's three stars in England's Thousand Best Churches ⭐ ⭐ ⭐
•
The Domesday Book (1086) records a priest at Astbury, but no church. Carved stone fragments, coffin lids and the base of a cross found nearby hint at an earlier Saxon church on this site. Inside, you can still see part of an Anglo-Saxon cross-shaft with interlace carving, dating from the late 10th or 11th century. Outside, a yew tree in the churchyard is believed to be over 1,000 years old, so it may have stood here since Anglo-Saxon times.
•
The oldest fabric in the present church is a round-arched Norman doorway from around the mid-12th century. The church was then rebuilt in stone through the 13th and 14th centuries, and a major late-15th-century rebuild added the clerestory (finished c.1525). It displays Early English, Decorated and Perpendicular Gothic, so every stage of medieval English church building is here.

There's even a pub across the road, so it's well worth a visit!

📍St Oswald's Church, Malpas, Cheshire, England 🏴󠁧󠁢󠁥󠁮󠁧󠁿
•
Deriving from old French, the name Malpas interestingly means 'bad/difficult passage', a reference to the wilderness of this territory, always vulnerable to Welsh raids.
•
The church sits on an 11th century earthwork Motte which was once the site of a castle founded by the Barons of Malpas, however the castle has all but vanished. Nevertheless, the Perpendicular church would leave it's mark in any county, towering over its village like a castle in its own right.
•
The sandstone exterior celebrates donations at the turn of the 16th century by the Cholmondeley and Brereton families. The latter's emblem, a chained bear, can be seen as a corbel on the outside near the porch, adjacent to a corbel of Siamese twins.
•
Inside, your eyes immediately gaze up to the nave roof, a work dated to roughly 1480, panelled and with a pro-fusion of exquisite foliate bosses and angels. They have been restored to a dark rich oak with gold trimmings. The statues used to be replaced as and when they rotted or fell. They have now been stabilised and their wings replaced with fibre-glass.
•
St Oswald's two treasures are undoubtedly the Cholmondeley and Brereton chapels which I will follow in my next post. Stay tuned...

📍Parish Church of Saint Mary and All Saints, Whitmore, Staffordshire, England 🏴󠁧󠁢󠁥󠁮󠁧󠁿
•
Cute little church situated on a small hill across from a tea room 🫖
•
The Church of St Mary and All Saints may have stood from Saxon times, but the earliest structure visible is from the Norman period. It became a Rectory in its own right in 1807.

📍St Oswald's Priory, Gloucester 🏴󠁧󠁢󠁥󠁮󠁧󠁿
•
St. Oswald's Priory was founded by Lady Æthelflæd of Mercia, daughter of Alfred the Great, around 900. It was known as 'the Golden Minster'.
•
The Priory Church, initially dedicated to St. Peter by Osric, ruler of the Hwicce, was constructed from recycled Roman stones (it was presumably these stones which gave it the name Golden Minster). At this time it was a bold and unusual move to build a church as there were frequent Viking raids.
•
At first it was a Christian cemetery, but in 909 a combined West Saxon and Mercian raid into Danish territory resulted in the translation of some of the bones of St Oswald to the new church from Bardney Abbey in Lincolnshire, and the priory was rededicated to St Oswald's in his honour.
•
Archaeological excavations in the 1970s revealed a 10th century fragment of carved slab from the grave of someone extremely important (Picture 6). It is thought that the slab was the cover of the tomb to either Lady Æthelflæd (d. 918) or her husband Lord Æthelred (d. 911) who were interred into the Priory after their deaths.
•
Lady Æthelflæd was instrumental in the continuation of her father's dream of a unified England. This dream was later achieved by her nephew King Æthelstan.

Travelling back over 1,300 years for Church Sunday. ⛪️🍂
Escomb Church, County Durham, is one of only three complete Anglo-Saxon churches remaining in England, making it one of the oldest churches still standing in the country. Founded in around AD 670, much of Escomb was built using stone from the Roman Fort at Vinovia, but the architectural style is typically Saxon. A simple two cell structure, the nave is narrow and tall and the chancel rectangular. The interior is dominated by the Roman arch to the chancel, which retains a medieval wall painting beneath it. The altar bears an Anglo-Saxon stone cross, dating to at least the 9th century. The south porch is post-conquest and dates to the 14th century. The church seats only 65 people and in the 19th century the local population outgrew it. A new parish church was built and Escomb fell into disrepair, losing part of its roof. The church was restored in the 1870s, again in the 1920s, and once more in the 1960s. ⛪️⚒️

📍St Olaf's Church, York, England 🏴󠁧󠁢󠁥󠁮󠁧󠁿
•
St.Olaf's is dedicated to the memory of S.Olave (or Olaf) the Viking, King of Norway 🇳🇴, who died in 1030AD. His statue (pictured) is over the porch as you enter the Church.
•
St.Olaf was canonised for his contributions to the Christianisation of Norway. However, many of you may know that Olaf is credited with contributing to the siege of Canterbury with fellow Viking Thorkell 'the Tall' in 1011 and the further destruction of London Bridge in 1014.
•
The Church was founded by Earl Siward, himself of Norse descent in approximately 1050AD.
•
In 1080, the Church was given to Stephen, a monk of Whitby and eight years later King William 'Rufus' II gave the monks who resided within the Church four acres of the land adjoining, and himself laid the foundation stone of what became St. Mary's Abbey. St.Olaf's may have been used temporarily as a monastic church, whilst the Abbey was being built.
•
At the beginning of the fourteenth century, it is recorded that the Church fell into a state of neglect. In 1395, Archbishop Arundel ordered that the Church be restored, but it was not until 1467 that the monks began to rebuild it.
•
During the Civil War, a battery of cannons was placed on the roof of the Church by the defenders in the siege of York. The Church suffered greatly, and early in the eighteenth century had to be restored again, the South wall being rebuilt.
•
The Church has suffered so much from restoration that it is not possible to date accurately its architecture, its general character is Post-Gothic Perpendicular.
