Last week, after launching the @MitzvahTruck, I drove to Washington, D.C., to report from the White House.

As I made the drive, I was overwhelmed with doubts about the journey I had just begun. The goal is to take the truck to all 50 states over the next 2½ years, meeting and connecting with Jews from every background.

How am I going to do this while working full time? How will I find lost and forgotten Jews in every state? How will I cover the expenses? The doubts seemed endless.

That evening, after a successful day at the White House, I headed to the Library of Congress for a dinner with elected officials, business leaders, and members of the Jewish community.

As I parked the truck, a young man on a bicycle rode past, then suddenly turned around.

“Mitzvah Truck!” he exclaimed. “I’ve got to get a picture of that.”

Seeing his excitement, I asked if he was Jewish.

“I’m an evangelical Christian,” he replied, pointing to the cross on his lapel. Then he smiled and added, “But my mom is Jewish.”

“That means you’re Jewish too,” I said.

He reached beneath his shirt and pulled out a hidden Star of David necklace.

Less than a minute later, his sleeve was rolled up, I was wrapping tefillin on his arm, and he borrowed my yarmulke to recite the blessings.

We prayed together, exchanged contact information, and just like that, he was on his way.

I stood there smiling.

Only minutes earlier, I had been questioning whether this project would work. Then the Mitzvah Truck drew over a young man who still carried his Jewish identity close to his heart, giving him the opportunity to reconnect with his heritage through a simple, yet profound act of connection to G-D.

I still don’t know how this journey will unfold. But I trust that G-D will guide me to the right places—and guide the right people to me.
