POSTS STORIES REELS TAGGED

Heyyy peeps, I’m Yuxi from Beijing,China and I’ve been living in Nottingham, UK for the past 5 years.

I got accepted two years ago but decided to take a break before starting uni. Over the past two years, I’ve been working as a freelance documentary photographer and solo backpacking/hitchhiking around the world a bit.

I also run marathons, climb and hike, do pottery, and love cooking and baking!

I’m interested in so many things, so I’m still unsure about my major — but I’ll probably double major in Arts & Humanities and Social Sciences!

Can’t wait to see u all in SF!

Echoes is now open to the public! The exhibition takes place at the most famous circle in the world, @stonehenge, but it focuses on lesser-known circles - Arbor Low, Nine Ladies, and Kingston Russell.

In this exhibition, @bartonmade, @serena.burgis, and @ciciyx_ use photography to challenge perceptions of heritage and highlight themes of identity and belonging in a new generation’s search for connection and belonging.

Open until 7 September 2025!

Echoes has been created in partnership with English Heritage, as part of their youth engagement programme, @eh_shoutoutloud.

Yuxi Hou (@ciciyx_ ), one of the commissioned Focal Point artists, took an anthropological approach to the commission.

Yuxi visited the Arbor Low Stone Circle regularly, getting to know the diverse communities and individuals who use the site. She turns her focus to the rituals, ceremonies, and offerings that take place there. As she sees it, Arbor Low has always been a place of gathering, healing and connecting with people and nature. Today, people continue to visit Arbor Low to find solace, healing and a sense of community.

As a participant observer, Yuxi joined summer solstice celebrations at Arbor Low and conducted in depth interviews with members of the spiritual community that are drawn to the site.

As part of her work of engaging with the community, Yuxi hosted a photo walk and two photo-collage workshops at nearby Hartington, where participants shared stories of Arbor Low while re-constructing and re-imagining the history of the stones.

Yuxi is supported by mentor Yan Preston during this commission.

Photoworks and @englishheritage‘s youth engagement programme @eh_shoutoutloud have joined forces to launch the Focal Point Commission. This initiative supports three emerging artists – Sally Barton, Serena Burgis and Yuxi Hou – in a residency programme focused on exploring and redefining heritage through the lens of contemporary photography.

#REFLECTOR Artist Feature - @ciciyx_

Upcoming Exhibition @thenewartgallerywalsall, 26th Oct 2024 - 9th March 2025

Preview: Saturday 26th Oct, 2-4pm. All welcome.

Bio:
Yuxi Hou (b.2004) is a documentary visual storyteller born in Beijing and is currently based in Nottingham. As a new immigrant and young adult herself, she’s constantly reflecting on her marginalised position in society, exploring themes such as growth, identity, migration, memories and family through a sensitive account of human interactions in distinct communities.

Project Statement:
“Those Who Leave, Those Who Stay” is a photographic exploration of my journey through grief following the sudden loss of my father to a brain haemorrhage when I was twelve. Death is always a taboo in our culture, and the collective response from my family was to forget and move on.

A few years ago, I discovered a family photo that had been ‘adjusted’ by my grandmother. She had cut out my father’s head and replaced it with an image of my brother. This revealed the unspoken secret that had shadowed our family for years and also made me realise that I had never truly begun to grieve for the man who I deeply loved yet scarcely knew.

Seven years after his passing, I returned to my father’s hometown—a place I visited each New Year during my childhood. There, I reconnected with his siblings, relatives, colleagues, and friends, uncovering stories about his life before I was born. Through their memories, I learned about the lives intertwined with his, the stories of those who left and those who stayed.

This series is a visual documentation of my grief and a tribute to the people we love and the places we call home. It aims to capture the essence of memory, loss, and the silent and strong bonds that persist through time and space.

#REFLECTOR, is a new and unique professional development programme, for emerging Photographers, Artists and Curators of Colour working with photography, who are based in England.

Meet our amazing team consisting of talented artists, curators and educators. We're excited to work together to make a change and to create a safe environment to explore creativity within communities that don't have access to easy Art. We intend to work with a range of materials, with our curriculum focusing on experimentations and collaboration, allowing our students the full exposure to a functional creative environment. We are very excited to start our first session with the @acaa_london and are looking forward to working with more organisations like the British red cross from next year onwards.
