Dr. Miles Silman, who co-founded what would become the Sabin Center in 2010, has been a relentless proponent of transdisciplinary research built to tackle real-world problems at global scale throughout his decades-long career as a conservation biologist.

Silman helps head up the Intelligent Remote Sensing in Conservation and Discovery Group (IRSC Lab), an interdisciplinary group of researchers from Wake’s Biology and Computer Science departments in collaboration with researchers and conservationists beyond Wake including our colleagues at CINCIA. The team works on methods to apply machine learning, artificial intelligence, and statistics to the problems of conservation in the Peruvian Amazon and around the world.

Join us at Wake Forest University on Nov 5 for 𝙎𝙪𝙨𝙩𝙖𝙞𝙣𝙖𝙗𝙡𝙚, 𝙅𝙪𝙨𝙩 & 𝘼𝙗𝙪𝙣𝙙𝙖𝙣𝙩𝙡𝙮 𝙒𝙞𝙡𝙙: 𝙍𝙚𝙨𝙞𝙡𝙞𝙚𝙣𝙩 𝙇𝙚𝙖𝙙𝙚𝙧𝙨𝙝𝙞𝙥 𝙛𝙤𝙧 𝙊𝙪𝙧 𝙀𝙧𝙖 as Dr. Silman facilitates a discussion with colleagues from the IRSC about the ways they are developing and deploying advanced technologies to address the devastating environmental and human impact of illicit gold mining in the Amazon.

“Today we were able to put more than a decade of Wake Forest and CINCIA-led scientific evidence on mercury contamination in the Amazon directly into the hands of the pope. That evidence shows that mercury associated with gold mining does not stay at the mine—it moves through ecosystems and ultimately reaches people, including some of the Amazon’s most vulnerable Indigenous communities.”

Luis E. Fernandez, Senior Sabin Fellow and Research Professor at Wake Forest University. Fernandez and his colleagues were honored to enjoy an audience with Pope Leo XIV yesterday to share their work.

As the executive director of The Center for Amazonian Scientific Information (CINCIA), Luis has dedicated the past decade of his life to advancing our scientific knowledge, engaging the local community, and promoting global awareness of this devastating challenge.

And right there with him has been Sabin Center Fellow Claudia Vega, CINCIA’s mercury program lead and a 2025 TED Fellow. Vega noted that the point of their research isn't just about measurement of harm: "It’s to generate evidence that can guide health protection, monitoring, better regulation, safer food choices, and ultimately reduce the amount of mercury entering these ecosystems in the first place.”

Fernandez and Vega were joined by Jesus Olivero Verbel of the University of Cartagena, Colombia, and Oscar Campanini Gonzales, executive director of the Center for Information and Documentation-Bolivia. This select group of scientists were invited to the Vatican to share their findings with Pope Leo XIV, an ardent advocate for environmental justice for our planet and our people.
