Two days until PYRRHIC SYMPHONY (@univnebpress) arrives in the world! I began writing this book back in 2009 when I wasn’t sure if my first collection (what would, 11 years later, become INDEX OF HAUNTED HOUSES) would ever come to light. So, as I write in the first poem of the new book, “I said to hell with it and walked on full of hellfire & fluoridated water” & wrote poems without regard for anything other than what the poems demanded. Seventeen years later, thanks to the support of so many friends & family members, here we are. And I’m particularly thankful for all the editors & readers at all the journals, magazines, prizes, & anthologies that gave so many of the poems in this book their first printed home: @agni.magazine, @believermag, The Best American Poetry, @boulevardlitmag, @cincinnatireview, @denverquarterly, @gulfcoastjournal, @highcountrynews, The Literary Review, @miraclemonocle, @montrealprize, New American Writing, @newohioreview, The Offending Adam, @poetryintl, @poetryireland, @thepoetrysociety, @poetry_society, @prairie_schooner, @smartishpace, @torreyhousepress, @westbranchmag, & @zyzzyvamag. Like the landing lights on a pitch-black runway, they promised that this vessel would one day arrive safely home—a home that I’m delighted to have found at University of Nebraska Press.

For the @cincinnatireview, I talked with my dear friend Rose Zinnia @parareligiousmoss about writing THE VICE OF OUR JAWS and what I’ve learned from a year of having HARDLY CREATURES out in the world. Love you, Rose. Lynk in byo.

Grateful to be staying my incredible team at Tin House. Grateful, too, to have received support for this project from @creative_capital, @mccormack_writing_center, @lambdaliterary, @sewaneewriters, @macdowell1907, @khncenter, @hambidgecenter, @millayarts, and @peterbulloughfoundation.

Here it is —— the highly anticipated fiction version of our “magazines that pay for your poetry” posts! I’m so glad that those posts were able to help my fellow writers, and now hopefully this will be of use to you fiction writers. Again, these journals are legit and I can confirm from thorough research as well as word of mouth. Lacuna Vox is not affiliated with any of the litmags listed here, so if you are interested in submitting to any of them, please simple search the name of the magazine on google or head directly to their website through the links embedded in the post. That would provide you with the most accurate info regarding payment method, eligibility, acceptance rate, etc. Best of luck 🫶

Welcome to Lacuna Vox. We are a youth-run literary magazine that is dedicated to helping young writers publish their work and make their voices heard. Feel free to head to our website lacunavox.com for more details if you’re interested in publishing with us! We also post about resources and opportunities for creatives, so if you’re interested in any of that, feel free to give us a follow 🤍🖤

Thrilled to share that I will be continuing my track record of slightly increasing the Cincinnati metro area’s general spookiness in my new role as Managing Editor at @cincinnatireview! I am grateful beyond measure to be returning to the journal that was so integral to my own time in UC’s PhD program, and for the opportunity to help continue its legacies of literary excellence and student support. A huge thank-you to @lisaampleman, @milliners_model, and Matt O’Keefe (who is not on Instagram) for welcoming me to this role!

(First picture is from 1999; second is from yesterday, right before the MCR show. While consistency is not necessarily a virtue in life, it IS in editing, and I look forward to expanding my practice in it on the page as well as in my wardrobe.)
