Save for the campaign signs that dot lawns across the suburbs every four years, home decor isn’t necessarily considered a conventionally political topic. In the comments on this very site, we've seen pleas to "leave the politics out of it." But how we design our homes is, in fact, inherently political: it's about where we spend our money, who gets our attention and how they get it, and what trends we favor. "Whether design is political to you would be determined by how you exist in society,” says Cherub Stewart of @floridawaterinteriors. “As a Black person in America, I was born being politicized. Most definitely, design becomes political to me [and] things can get political real quick, if I allow space for it.”

As consumers, the task at hand is to continually dig deeper, go beyond just the aesthetically pleasing, and to learn more about the politics that permeate our home spaces every single day. Full story at the link in bio.

Tamir Rice would have been a graduate of this year’s class. His life was stolen in 2014 by the failure of the police state informed by white supremacy and anti Blackness. The cap and tassels might be weighing differently on the head and shoulders of so many folks within this graduating class. As a movement and as a community growing deeper and closer in awareness, we must lift them high and center the joy of this beautiful accomplishment alongside this struggle. For Tamir, and all of the graduates of 2020, CONGRATULATIONS 🎉

Over the past week, we’ve paused our posting to amplify the voices who need to be heard the most. What has stood out most clearly is silence is not the answer, our voices and support are what is needed. We pledge to use our platform to stand up for what is right and support the movements that align with our beliefs as a company. .
Due to the closure of our stores during the COVID outbreak, we are unfortunately not in a position to financially support many of the amazing groups doing work for the black community in a signifcant way. However, many small contributions are just as impactful as one large one. With this in mind: Anyone who donates $25 or more to the following groups will receive a $25 gift card from us:
- @naacp_ldf - @colorofchange - @blklivesmatter - @campaignzero - @splcenter - @aclu_nationwide .
Simply send a screen shot of your donation to info@theclosettradingco.com to receive your $25 gift card. .
Thank you @cinderblkk for the beautiful art and @muniwine for the idea.

What did you have for lunch today? Was it filled with bright and delicious produce bought from your favorite market or grocery store? 🌽🍊🥑🥦 Farmworkers are the backbone of our lives ; keeping us fed and cared for but far too often, they are rendered invisible. Farmworkers are some of the most marginalized people in our society and yet, they are perhaps the most crucial industry in our lives. .
.
⚠️“Higher-ups see the benefits, but the actual workers do not see them. We work to survive, but we are barely surviving.” ⚠️
.
.
Farmworkers are risking their lives to keep us all alive and maintain a sense of normalcy within our food systems at an even greater risk to their own health and well-being. Extreme weather, inaccessible sanitation facilities, crowded spaces, and long hours are some of the conditions that farmworkers face and now in the midst of an ongoing pandemic, farmers and farmworkers and even more vulnerable. COVID-19 exposure is extremely high due to an inability to practice social distancing and requests for help and access to testing sites and PPE (personal protection equipment) are largely overlooked and unaddressed. Many farm workers are undocumented and/or part of migrant communities where they are working for a period of time, while supporting families in their home countries and communities, then returning to work the land seasonally, often for less than minimum wage. “We cannot ask for help because they do not recognize us.”
.
.
Pressure on Government for COVID19 testing site in Immokalee, FL has been successful, but farmworkers still need our help! Follow the work of Immokalee,FL farmworkers campaign to gain;
.
🌱 Paid time off and free COVID-19 testing and medical care
. 🌱Living wages and hazard pay when necessary
.
🌱Personal protective equipment .
🌱Access to sanitation facilities .
🌱Pathway to citizenship and the release of family members from detention centers
.
🌱 Access to government stimulus pay

"I am essential to the survival of the economy. I keep everything going. I am a big part of keeping some type of normalcy. I am your local grocery store worker and I deserve respect and respectable, self-sustaining compensation. I deserve to be safe."⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀
.⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀
.⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀ Grocery store front-line workers have potentially high exposure to the virus because of frequent interaction with the public. Eighty percent (80%) are worried about contracting the coronavirus at work and 86% do not believe that their employers are doing enough to protect them. Because many front-line employees are hired as part-time employees, they are not eligible for health benefits. The average cashier salary is $24,960, and workers have received an increase of only $2/hour as "hazard pay," since the covid19 pandemic. Eighty-nine percent (89%) of grocery store workers report that this is NOT ENOUGH, while CEOs like Publix Todd Jones and Kroger CEO W. Rodney McMullen made $2.48 million and $11.7 million in recently reported wages.⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀
.⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀
.⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀
How can we stand in solidarity?⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀
Limit the number of shopping trips and if you do have to go to a store, make the trip as efficient as possible. Maintain your distance from employees for safety and speak to managers to advocate for better working conditions and hazard pay. Click the link in our bio to learn more and sign the petition in support of workers! ⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀
