How can you eat healthy and keep the grocery bill low?

• You can cut food costs by eating more meals at home and by making sure they feature some of the healthiest foods from your supermarket -- foods like whole grains, vegetables, and beans. you really can save a ton of money on groceries if you choose to or have to, even when you are trying to make healthy food choices.

• Buying fresh produce is great if you can afford it, but I know it doesn’t fit every budget. Fortunately, frozen and canned varieties of fruits and veggies are an affordable way to nourish your body with vitamins and minerals that will increase your energy, immunity, and health. The cheapest fresh produce typically depends on what season it is, so be a savvy shopper. I made a post recently about what produce is in season in the fall, so those would be a great variety to stock up on!

• Since meat can be one of the most expensive food you buy, check out your local ads to find the best deal on meat. Do a search once or twice a week as needed and enjoy the savings. Other proteins that are more affordable include tofu, eggs, beans and lentils.

• Choose foods that can be used in a variety of ways! There is an endless varieties of stir fry you could make with veggie rice, a meat/protein, and a vegetable or two. Oatmeal is another food that can be prepared in a number of ways!

• Use money saving apps like Flipp, Checkout 51, Eclipsa or Flashfood. Flipp shows all of the flyers in your area for easy price matching or to see where has the best deals. Checkout 51 and Eclipsa are cash back apps where you can get 50 cents-$3 back for buying things you would already be buying. Flashfood shows what products are discontinued at stores near you!

I hope you found this post helpful! 💛

Will eating at night cause me to gain weight?

It’s a common belief that eating past 7 pm or late at night will cause you to gain weight. But is this true?
In reality, how much and what you eat is much more important than when you eat. So then where did this myth come from?

One explanation for the association between eating at night and weight gain is that those who are late eaters tend to eat more calories overall.
No matter when you eat them, eating more calories than you need will lead to weight gain. Not only do late eaters tend to eat more food, they often make poorer food choices as well. At night, you may be more likely to choose unhealthy, calorie-dense foods. These are foods with little nutritional value, such as chips, soda and ice cream.

Again, when it comes to weight gain, what you eat matters more than when you eat. If you eat within your daily calorie needs, you won’t gain weight simply by eating at night. For example, my family and I eat dinner every night around 8:30-9:30 and then we snack after if we’re hungry!

If you aren’t hungry after dinner, you don’t have to eat! It may seem tempting to grab a bag of chips if you’re watching a movie, but if you’re not hungry or truly wanting to eat more, you DONT HAVE TO! Break that habit!

But, If you’re truly hungry after dinner, consider choosing nutrient-dense foods and beverages. These are lower-calorie foods with high nutritional value.
Some great after dinner snacks include:

🍿 Air popped popcorn
🍦 Frozen yogurt or low calorie ice cream (like halo top)
🍒 Bowl of fresh fruit
💪🏻 Protein smoothie
🥣 Oatmeal
🥣 Yogurt
🍎 Apple and powdered peanut butter
🍚🍰 Rice cakes
🍌 Banana
🍉 Watermelon
💪🏻🍫 Protein bar

THE BOTTOM LINE:
You won’t gain weight by eating later if you eat within your daily calorie needs! If you’re hungry after dinner, chose nutrient-dense foods and low-calorie beverages.

Do you eat/snack at night? What’s your go to?
