That was my setup for the past 5-day XTB commercial shoot for Birdhouse, directed by @marcin_filipek and shot by DP @dabal known for always using Cooke anamorphics with Sony Venice 2 and a Vari ND setup.

Not exactly the most Steadicam-friendly configuration… but with Cyclo Lite, even the heavy, scary builds can now fly on just two batteries and a short sled.

Amazing.

MediaPro have been covering Laliga for several years with their cmotion cPRO LCS and Cinefade VariND. This has enabled them to bring a truly cinematic experience of this wonderful game to viewers around the world. With the addition of cmotion cGate, lens, camera and Cinefade control can now be passed over existing IP solutions to efficiently streamline dataflow and eliminate any risk of RF interference.

We’re big fans of tech that pushes the boundaries of storytelling. @cinefade is a tool for varying depth of field without touching your exposure.

Whether you’re isolating a subject in a crowded room or creating a “visual punctuation mark,” this bit of kit is a game-changer.

Shoutout to the team at @cinefade for making the impossible look effortless.

Thank you @arri_rental for letting me test a few toys at your premises. Especially the 'new' NIA-1 and its new field of possibilities!
Also, first time with the Alexa 35 XT on a private meeting 🤝 😎

NEW: We’re super excited to announce the arrival of the @cinefade Vari360 at Cinemechanics! The Cinefade is a one-of-a-kind tool that allows you to change your depth of field without changing the exposure of your image by darkening or brightening in perfect sync with an iris motor. It can also work as a motorized Rota Pola and Variable ND filter, all of which work seamlessly with the @arri Hi-5 handset. Check it out at Cinemechanics!

Child’s Fare directed by @kirstymclean

One of my favourite shorts to this day directed my long time friend Kirsty. The film is still doing the festival run but it had its world premiere at @boltonfilmfest this year.

Shot in Glasgow over five days, we knew we wanted a quiet cinematography. Most of it is static and observational, like our main character, Abby. We only went hand held when the scenes were dynamic, dictated by the actors performances and movements. We mostly kept the camera at Abby’s eye level so the audience could experience the world through her eyes.

Abby spends most of the story holding everything in, until she finally breaks. To mirror that, we used the @cinefade in one particular scene. As her emotions build, the depth of field intensifies until she snaps. I like how sublte the effect is, not distracting the audience from the moment and the charachter’s performance, but rather accompaning the feeling (see the clip in the final slides)

We also had fun doing a rig for the shopping trolley and some lens baby action for flash backs. Shot on Mini LF and Mamiya 645. Thank you @nodramaltd for your support ❤️

Full credits on my IG, any questions give me a shout x

You Ask Too Much is a short film by Ajay Rakhraj about the months leading up to his grandmother’s passing, shown from her point of view. Ajay had seen my other first person short Terminally in Love and liked that I had thought deeply about POV, but wanted a very different visual language to represent an experience of increasing isolation. She has limited mobility and is near-deaf, relying on a text to speech app on a tablet to understand her family, who are moving her to a new residence against her will. So the film was to be built from static compositions, referencing films by Edward Yang and Andrei Tarkovsky. We shot in his family’s apartment, with the family members that experienced it playing themselves.

In the final act she falls and is concussed, which we represented with a modified Helios lens with a dual slit aperture, creating the appearance of double vision. She is then treated with hydromorphone which gives brief clarity, followed by steady decline as she floats in and out of consciousness. To depict this we used a Noctilux T0.95 lens with the Cinefade system, which links an iris motor to a variable ND filter to adjust depth of field without affecting exposure. The injection increases her visual depth of field, bringing more of her world into focus (slide 6). At its widest aperture the Noctilux has a soft, vignetted image, and slowly ramping the Cinefade brought the image gently from soft tunnel vision into brief clarity and back again (7).

Ajay had taken iphone photos of his family in the time leading to her passing, which had automatically generated short video clips from the live photo feature. When played consecutively these created a documentary of what his family had experienced. Its fragmented simplicity had a striking beauty that informed our approach to the film - brief moments in unadorned sequence that represent life. It’s a real privilege to be able to shape a film’s form directly from lived experience, and for its creation to be an act of healing.
