For this shoot, Aerial Director of Photography @michaelfitzmaurice and I, along with our @teamxbrand partners, utilized the world’s most advanced stabilized jet camera gimbal—the Phoenix by @immortalcamera—to capture some truly breathtaking footage.

🎥 Behind the Scenes of Top Gun: Maverick 🚀

Here’s a glimpse into how we brought the now-iconic “Darkstar” to life! These clips show the magic behind creating this unforgettable aircraft, starting with a real Boeing F/A-18 Super Hornet as our subject. Our incredible VFX team digitally replaced the Super Hornet with the sleek “Darkstar,” ensuring every detail—physics, light, shadows, reflections—felt real, visceral, and true to life.

As the Aerial Coordinator for the film, I selected the L-39 @Cinejet for this sequence, guided by the expertise and input of the legendary Aerial Director of Photography, David Nowell.

A huge shoutout to our “Picture Ship” pilot, TAMBO, for flawlessly flying the Darkstar and helping us deliver the cinematic adventure that director Joseph Kosinski envisioned.

Massive respect to Tom Cruise and Jerry Bruckheimer, whose dedication to practical effects ensured Top Gun: Maverick was grounded in reality with minimal CGI. Their commitment to authenticity made this movie the thrilling experience it is today!

Behind the Scenes of @devotionmovie 🎥

While many assumed this stunning sequence was fully CGI, the truth is even more impressive: the background, the clouds, and the F4U Corsairs in this shot are all 100% real. For those familiar with this scene, a few additional Corsairs were digitally added in the background of the formation later on via VFX/CGI.

This epic aerial footage was captured over the breathtaking Cascade Mountain Range in the Pacific Northwest. Utilizing our L-39 @cinejet, with Aerial DP Michael FitzMaurice skillfully operating the camera gimbal and composing these remarkable shots, we brought this sequence to life.
