"Pather Panchali"- 1955
(Eng: song of the little road) is one of the very first Bengali movies based on the Novel of the same name. And my love for both is immaculate 🥹🫶🏻 it has very less dialogues but it conveys emotions 10x more than any existing film in this century.

Taika Waititi’s mom, Robin Cohen, recommended Christine Leunens’ 2008 novel Caging Skies to him around 2010/2011. The book is about Johannes, a Hitler Youth member in WWII Vienna, who discovers his parents are hiding a Jewish girl, Elsa, in their house. Leunens was inspired by a French woman whose family hid a Jewish man during the war and later married him. Waititi loved the “spine” of the story — a boy indoctrinated by the Nazis who has his worldview shattered by a girl in the attic.

Waititi jokes that his mom described the book “poorly,” and the way she told it sounded like a great film idea. When he actually read it, it was much darker and didn’t have his comedic style. So he kept the core plot but added his own twist: the imaginary friend Hitler in “Jojo Rabbit.”
