Introducing Spotlight, The Filmgoer’s new weekly editorial series. Each week, a Chicago writer, programmer, filmmaker, artist, or film lover will choose three screenings in the city worth knowing about and tell us why. This week's edition is presented in partnership with @cinemaunlit For the first edition, we asked Daniela Anne Cantu, a Chicago-based writer, photographer, and filmmaker; Head of PR and Editor in Chief at Cinema Unlit; and Editorial Assistant at Newcity Magazine, to make the picks. @danielacannot Her selections for Sep 11–17: Climax — Gaspar Noé’s delirious psychological horror, with a special Not-Quite-Midnight screening at @davistheater preceded by a live DJ set from Miss Twink USA, @misstwinkusa at Sojourn @sojournchicago. Presented by @momimgoing. Mysterious Skin — Gregg Araki’s intimate meditation on memory and trauma, newly restored in 4K and playing at @musicboxchicago Resident Evil — Daniela’s bet on Zach Cregger's latest. We can't wait to see Austin Abrams venture into Raccoon City. Opens Sep 17 at multiple AMC locations. Visit thefilmgoer.com for Daniela’s full thoughts on each pick. Metamorphosis is now out. You can watch it on YouTube with the link included or own it digitally via the CinemaUnlit Gumroad store. This film was originally made during my junior year at DePaul University, and while I’m still waiting on a some end of year festivals, I figured I’d just put it out because I have a couple other projects nearing completion. This film was such a fun experience to make, and I’m super grateful for everyone who helped make this possible. I’m especially grateful for my producer team @gabrielledacuycuy @denis.gjoni_ @slaglebag3l & @tanja.mey for their help bringing this from script to life, my DP and now assistant mayor of New York @charleyeagle and my brother and magnificent first AD and filmmaker @liam.baldwins. Of course this film would not have been made at all if my older brother @valentinsandoval25 didn’t spend time helping me write this in the spare bedroom of my ion apartment, and it was one of the most fun writing experiences I’ve had and we used a whiteboard and everything. If you were on set or helped by donating, I love you and thank you for giving me your time and confidence in this weird movie. Please give it a watch if you’re interested. #surreal #film #shortfilm #kafka #super8
