383 km of 1000 km: Did you know sea turtles have existed for more than 100 million years — surviving even the extinction of dinosaurs? Today, 6 out of 7 sea turtle species are threatened with extinction.

For World Turtle Day, we created a turtle out of trash collected on the beach. Plastic pollution is one of the most visible threats, with turtles often mistaking plastic bags for jellyfish. But it is far from the only one.

Climate change is heating up nesting beaches and changing hatchling sex ratios. Fishing gear causes thousands of accidental deaths every year. Coastal development destroys nesting habitats, and light pollution disorients baby turtles trying to find the ocean.

Protecting the turtles means protecting the ocean and us!

Day 24 / 91: 300 km of 1000 done! Celebrations!!! Island 2 is hiked and I celebrate having met so many amazing human beings. 1 post is not enough to express the energy and beauty this island has to offer. Muito obrigado! Now I have to find a boat that brings me to São Jorge! A school is waiting there on the 20th of May... Will I manage?

Day 22 / 91: We don't need to clean the beach as the ocean and its waves bring more plastics every day from across the globe. What we need is happy people joining together to spread positivity and awareness. Just 1 piece and 1 photo shared publicly can open eyes of people and plant the seed. From small acts to global awareness for laws and systems to get adjusted.

Day 19 / 91: Which animal should we create with the next school?
For millions of years, sea turtles have crossed the Atlantic long before humans existed. The waters of the Azores are an important habitat for these ancient travelers, especially juvenile loggerhead turtles drifting and feeding in the open ocean during their long migration across the Atlantic.

But today, turtles face growing threats from plastic pollution, fishing gear, boat strikes, climate change, and habitat destruction. A floating plastic bag can look like a jellyfish to a hungry turtle. Rising temperatures are also disrupting their reproduction, since warmer sands produce more female hatchlings.

Sea turtles are important indicators of ocean health, and protecting them means protecting the entire marine ecosystem.

Every piece of plastic removed and every protected marine area gives these ancient navigators a better chance to survive.
