Meow Brow, curated by Casey Weldon @caseyweldon , now in view at @gallery.ergo in Seattle, finds a fantastic balance of restraint and imaginative interpretations on a simple cat shaped panel that’s fun and surprising.

Group shows, especially themed ones, can be hit or miss (ten years ago, the Art Toy wave led to a plethora of pop tribute shows that we wished we had never experienced) but Meow Brow is warm and comforting, and perfectly timed for the moment. We welcome it to curl up on our mental lap and visually purr, while we rest and regroup awhile.

(Artists are tagged in individual images but you need to check out the gallery for the video clips, as there are way too many)

Welcome new NMC member Artist Kathie Olivas. Kathie writes in her artist statement, “For almost three decades, my work has explored society’s insatiable desire to assign ‘cuteness’ and our discomfort with the unknown. A dark blend of early American portraiture set in post-apocalyptic times, my paintings and sculptures are a satirical look at how fear affects our sense of reality. The wide-eyed children and anthropomorphic creatures are meant to evoke a nostalgic reaction reflecting isolation and uncertainty, yet they act as empowered alter egos. While these characters explore their new lonely worlds, they double as our narrators, capable of developing their defense mechanisms. They guide us through their reality as they experience it, and yet, even in their company, we are granted no reassurance.”
