Convention on International Trade in Endangered Species of Wild Fauna and Flora
🦋🌲🐠🌸🦥🌵
Regulating the world’s wildlife trade since 1975

POSTS STORIES REELS TAGGED

Women are integrally involved in the conservation and sustainable use of wild species.

On today’s International Day of #RuralWomen, let us remember that the implementation of CITES is better achieved with the engagement of women in rural communities, especially those which are traditionally dependent on CITES-listed species for their livelihoods.

This CITES & Livelihoods film tells the story of sustainable trade of Jatamansi (a CITES Appendix II species), valued for its aromatic roots and widely used in traditional medicine, aromatherapy, incense, and more. Explore the connections conservation, culture, and community livelihoods.

No environmental treaty can tackle today’s information challenges alone. 🤝

This week in Geneva, more than 20 environmental treaty secretariats met with UNEP for the 16th InforMEA Steering Committee. They agreed to work more closely together and to take a bigger role in steering their shared knowledge work.

The #MinamataConvention moderated the discussion on e-learning, outreach and artificial intelligence. Participants agreed on one clear priority: a stronger community of practice.

“@informea_un is much more than an information portal. It is a community of practice, a governance mechanism shared by MEAs, and a platform for innovation.” – Monika Stankiewicz, Executive Secretary, Minamata Convention

🦩🦜 As we commemorate the second peak of migration on #WMBD2026, we celebrate the migratory birds that connect our world through journeys spanning thousands of kilometres, linking ecosystems, cultures, and communities along the way.

Each sighting has value. Every observation helps us better understand how migratory birds are responding to a rapidly changing world.

Whether you’re a scientist, ranger, Indigenous knowledge holder, student, or bird enthusiast, your contribution matters.

Together, we are building the knowledge needed to conserve migratory birds, protect their flyways, and support international efforts to ensure these remarkable species continue to survive and thrive in the wild for countless generations to come.

Every Bird Counts. Your Observations Matter.

Happy #WorldMigratoryBirdDay2026! 🦉🦅

We had the wonderful opportunity to participate in the briefing for the 81st CITES meeting at the Geneva International Environment House.
It was a unique opportunity for us to meet international stakeholders and gain experience in a field of international collaboration of the utmost importance, such as the protection of flora and fauna.

A big thank you to the Environment House, the Geneva Environment Network, and CITES for hosting us.

Fireflies! 🌟
Ever seen one?
In Tanzania, fireflies are mostly listed as Not Evaluated or Data Deficient on the IUCN Red List because of a lack of targeted scientific surveys.
Worldwide, many firefly species are threatened, and some are close to extinction. Surprisingly, they receive little conservation attention.
They face deforestation of forests and montane ecosystems, overuse of agricultural chemicals and pesticides, and light pollution that disrupts their mating signals.
Let's work together to protect these creatures, so that the future generations can still see them glow. ❤️

A čo vlastne znamená CITES? 🤔
V praxi sa teda týka napríklad kontroly pôvodu chránených zvierat, ich dovozu a vývozu, potrebných povolení a boja proti nelegálnemu obchodu s ohrozenými druhmi. 🌍

#Rhinos 🦏 are keystone giants of nature, the megaherbivores shaping ecosystems, dispersing seeds, and enriching our soils.

Across rhino range States, these remarkable animals support livelihoods, attract tourism, and contribute to local prosperity. This means that protecting rhinos for the long term requires more than laws and enforcement; it requires the trust, engagement, and support of the communities living alongside them.

Conservation succeeds when local people share in its benefits.

In Mgaraganza Village in Tanzania is helping local people like Hofi Adam Shaaban and his wife, Zuwena Juma Maulid secure the rights to their land!🐪🦬🦌🐏🐕🐈🦃🦒🍃🍀🌾🌍✨☀️🪐

When faced with high hospital bills, Hofi felt helpless. The only asset he had was a piece of land, but this was close to useless without a Certificate of Customary Right of Occupancy (CCRO). Many residents in the village lacked resources and knowledge of securing rights to their land “Many thought land was worthless and nobody imagined he could have his land tenure rights” Hofi shares.🐒🦅🦋🐝🦕🐋🦧🐿️🦡🦅🪾🐉🦍🐋🦎🐙🐊🐃🐖🦏🐘🫍🦩🦙🐄🦚

With a strong determination and the guidance JGI Tanzania staff, Hofi and Zuwena embarked on a path toward achieving their land rights. “My wife and I received environmental conservation and land tenure rights education,” he recalls. They soon understood the steps they needed to take.

With this training and the funds for the CCRO processing fee provided by JGI, they proudly obtained a CCRO under joint ownership, tangible symbol of their resilience and a significant milestone in their journey. “At long last, we have the certificate which serves as a means for our future endeavors,” he says, showing the CCRO. “My wife and I now have peace of mind and my family’s future is secured.”

With their future secure, Hofi and Zuwena have the flexibility to look to their community’s long-term sustainability. You can help us support local people living in and around chimpanzee habitat by supporting JGI programs. Learn how you can make a difference today.
