🌡️⚠️ Sun and intense #heat can be dangerous to humans. The “lack of heat protection” already costs Germany billions of euros every year, said Martin Herrmann, chairman of the German Alliance Climate Change and Health (@allianz_klimawandel_gesundheit).

But there are solutions (for cities) to adapt to heat waves and to reduce their impact!
🌳🌱As reported in the @guardian, Scientists from @nanjing_university and @yale found out that urban green spaces “can help mitigate the impacts of urban heating due to the #climatecrisis and urban expansion” and thus “calling it an effective strategy that can reduce the impact of the ‘urban #heatisland’ phenomenon".

Maria-Cristina Florian provided a list for @archdaily of “How are Cities Adapting to #Heatwaves in the Face of Climate Change”. Two of the recommended solutions have been “Expanding the #GreenInfrastructure” and “Replacing Air Conditioning with Passive Cooling Systems”.

👉 We also have an answer: #moss.
Mosses can actively combat climate change and mitigate its consequences as they have the natural ability to bind #finedust and metabolize it. In addition, they cool the surrounding air by evaporating water on their enormous leaf surface. In combination with our active aeration, the ambient temperature can be reduced by up to 4 degrees, which corresponds to a cooling capacity of up to 6.500 watts. This ability is ideal for combating urban heat islands, which are becoming an ever-greater threat to people and nature because of advancing #climatechange. ⚠️💨 Even if "Global #airquality has been decreasing over the years and the effects are hard to ignore", still "99% of the population is now #breathing in polluted air and it is responsible for 7 million premature deaths annually", according to the World Health Organization (@WHO).

🙌 But, "𝗙𝗲𝗮𝗿 𝗻𝗼𝘁!", wrote Scarlett Buckley for @sustainablebrands, because "Of Course, #Nature Can Save Our Hot, Polluted Cities: Meet the #CityTree!"
🎙️ She had the chance to speak with our CEO and co-founder Peter Sänger about Green City Solutions and our "mission to clean city air by bringing nature back".

💡How?
By "combining #pollution-absorbing plants with digital technology", we merge "#airpurifying moss with smart sensors, active ventilation and irrigation technology". #GreenCiytSolutions "spent years researching and developing its solution — with a key breakthrough involving the identification of the most suitable species of #moss (out of 16,000 potential candidates), which is now growing at the company’s vertical #mossfarm".

🍃Want to know more about our super #plant moss?
“As the first green plant on our planet, moss can absorb and bind particles from the air like no other plant. It stores water and serves as a natural #airconditioner through evaporative cooling”, said Peter Sänger. “Because it absorbs everything it needs via the air, it can reduce #pollutants like fine dust", he continued. "Most of the absorbed #finedust is metabolized, which means that the moss grows on the dirt in the air. These properties make moss a perfect ally in the fight against #airpollution and #heatislands in cities”.

🚨 “Air pollution in cities is a growing concern that poses a serious threat to both human #health and the #environment” (@utopia_org).

⚠️ The @WHO estimates “that 90% of the global population is exposed to #airpollution levels that exceed safe limits, and the situation is particularly dire in urban areas”.
🌆According to the @UnitedNations & @WorldEconomicForum, the “share of the world's population living in cities is expected to rise to 80% by 2050, from 55% now”.
Thus, @utopia.de warns: “Considering the many human activities that contribute to air pollution, solutions are seriously needed”.
But ”fortunately, there are many simple remedies […] to reduce air pollution in #cities” from “small lifestyle changes to large-scale policy interventions”.
Read “Clearing the Air: 11 Simple Solutions to Air Pollution in Cities“ at https://utopia.org/guide/clearing-the-air-11-simple-solutions-to-air-pollution-in-cities:

1️⃣ Bicycle-Friendly Infrastructure
2️⃣ Green Spaces and Urban Forests: Natural Solutions to Air Pollution
3️⃣ Public Transportation
4️⃣ Carpooling & Ride-Sharing: Budget-Friendly Solutions to Air Pollution
5️⃣ Plant-based Eating
6️⃣ Alternative Fuel Vehicles: Futuristic Solutions to Air Pollution
7️⃣ Solar and Wind Energy
8️⃣ Waste Reduction & Recycling: Easy Solutions to Air Pollution
9️⃣ Sustainable Building Practices: Long-term Solutions to Air Pollution

1️⃣1️⃣ Education & Awareness about the Environment

💚 Our favourite?
Especially point 2️⃣, because in “the middle of a bustling #concrete „jungle, green spaces and urban forests are havens of #nature - places where trees, plants and other living things thrive”. Moreover, the urban green provides “shade and create spaces for recreation and relaxation”, offer “great spots for urban camping” - and the #greenspaces are “more than just nice to look at”, they “serve as a simple solution to air pollution in big cities”.
By "absorbing #carbondioxide and releasing oxygen”, #plants and trees are purifying the air. “The more green spaces and urban forests a city has, the more these natural air purifiers work around the clock to clear #smog”.

🍃 Meet our “Secret Superhero”!

📚 In “𝗛𝗮𝗿𝗻𝗲𝘀𝘀𝗶𝗻𝗴 𝘁𝗵𝗲 𝗻𝗮𝘁𝘂𝗿𝗮𝗹 𝗽𝗼𝘄𝗲𝗿 𝗼𝗳 𝗺𝗼𝘀𝘀 𝘄𝗶𝘁𝗵 𝗜𝗼𝗧 𝗳𝗼𝗿 𝗰𝗹𝗲𝗮𝗻𝗲𝗿 𝗮𝗻𝗱 𝘀𝗺𝗮𝗿𝘁𝗲𝗿 𝗰𝗶𝘁𝗶𝗲𝘀”, the OECD Forum Network has published our CEO’s thoughts on #moss, #cleanair and Green City Solutions’ active biofilters.

ℹ️ Mosses are an important ally in the fight against #airpollution and #globalwarming because they feed on airborne pollutants: Some mosses use the ammonia from vehicle #emissions as a nutrient; others bind and metabolise #finedust. In addition, all mosses are small sponges since they also draw water from the air, they do well to absorb and store a lot of moisture if the humidity is high. Via this evaporation, a considerable cooling of the air occurs.

🍃➕💻 We not only made the #mosses viable in the cities by combining an active filter system with vertical moss mats and intelligent technology, and supplying them with their own bio-algorithm, but we also measurably improved quality of and cooled the surrounding air. The polluted, heated air gets actively sucked into and pushed through the filtering moss mats.

🔬 According to tests with independent institutions, such as the TROPOS Institute for Tropospheric Research in Leipzig or the Institute for Air and Refrigeration Technology in Dresden (ILK Dresden), the active biofilters are able to clean up to 82% of fine dust from the air and cool the air by up to 4°C via evaporation.
In addition to the air-purifying and cooling effects, the mosses are also good for the #climate.

🆒 And that’s not all!
Since space in cities is limited, the moss filters have been equipped with smart additional benefits: they serve, for example, as a seating area in a fresh air zone or integrate free WiFi. Equipped with a large LCD screen, the moss filters #CityTree or #CityBreeze can be used as a digital advertising or information medium. To clean the air at a large scale, a free-standing wall element called #WallBreeze has also been developed.

We got featured on Springwise (@springwiseintelligence) as "Innovation That Matters"!🏆

So, as today's #FridayReads, we recommend "Moss wall biofilters clean and cool city air" written by Keely Khoury.📖

#Springwise.com has been discovering #innovationsthatmatter since 2002, "and during these uncertain times, we are committed to showcasing #innovation that really matters, to make our world a different place and in particular, to create innovative solutions for a post-COVID world". 🌍

Their main #takeaway?
"The global consortium of mayors (@c40cities) working together to solve the #climatecrisis has warned of an impending influx of new urban residents as communities flee environmental disasters." The members and the group itself are "urgently seeking solutions to myriad changes being wrought on the #environment and populations around the world". 🌇

Thus, "sharing high-impact, low cost, and easily accessed innovations is an important aspect of the collaboration, which is how innovations such as those of #GreenCitySolutions could help." 🤝

We at Green City Solutions have tested several "species of #moss to find the most effective ones for use in #mosswall biofilters". As #livingwalls are "becoming more common architectural features", with "the new moss version, cities have an improved ability to bring the fresh smell and #cleanair of a forest to crowded, busy locations. After removing the pollution and decreasing the temperature of the air, the moss releases cleaned, cooled air".🍃
