A think lab for city lovers—by @antevertibcn

POSTS STORIES REELS TAGGED

Metropolises are the result of decades, centuries, even millennia of urban development. As cities grow beyond their previous boundaries, especially in the Global South, their complexity brings new, multidimensional challenges, and new opportunities too.

That’s why we need to understand metropolises as ecosystems where economic, social, cultural and environmental dynamics are interconnected, and to tackle those challenges at that scale.

On World Metropolitan Day, an initiative of unhabitat and Metropolis, we celebrate their potential and achievements.

Ever wondered which are the world’s largest metropolises, and how many people live in them? Slide through to find out!

For more than 3 billion people, having a safe, secure and adequate place to call home remains out of reach. The 2026 theme, “Adequate Housing for All”, is a call to shift from diagnosis to action.

For years, tourism growth was something cities had to accommodate. Visitors arrive, consume and leave. Cities react.

That model is showing its limits. A new one is emerging — where cities don’t just manage tourism, but actively shape it as part of a broader territorial strategy.

We explore it in our roadmap on place-based tourism. Download it at @antevertibcn’s Knowledge hub | link in bio

Where can I park? When is the next bus? What’s happening in the city today?

In Vienna, residents can simply ask. @stadtwien’s WienBot is a 24/7 digital assistant, available by chat or voice, designed to answer everyday questions about city life — from transport and parking to events and public services.

More than a chatbot, it’s a glimpse into how AI can make the relationship between cities and residents simpler and more accessible.

WienBot is one of the cases we analyse in our report on AI and the public sector with @_esade. Discover the full insight on @antevertibcn’s Knowledge hub → link in bio

Cultural tourism accounts for 40% of international travel. Yet culture is often reduced to a stage: heritage as backdrop, tradition as spectacle, a place performing itself for the camera rather than living as it always has.

In our roadmap on place-based tourism, we explore what happens when destinations choose the opposite path — building their offer not around what’s photogenic, but around what’s genuinely theirs.

When a new public facility opens, there is always a risk that it becomes little more than a container for services — disconnected from the everyday urban and social life around it.

How can cities make sure these spaces really serve as hubs of belonging, care and neighbourhood life?

Extreme heat is no longer just a seasonal inconvenience — it’s a public health risk. As we noted in our ‘Outlook for Cities in 2026’, the link between heat, vulnerability and mortality is impossible to ignore. And cities have only one responsible direction: bring down urban temperatures.

These are some of the ones leading the way.
