Well, thought I would roll the dice on a Balinese red wine, to back up the white from yesterday. Appears this Reserve Red from @sababaywinery won a bronze medal from the China Wine & Spirits Awards, despite the silver sticker, confusing, and touted as “vibrant new latitude red style” whatever that means. A non-vintage wine, with grape varietal unknown

Colour is disconcerting, literally cola bottle penny sweets when I was a kid, that muddled middle bit that moves from brown to clear. Amazingly the nose is more of the same, yes, cola bottle penny sweets, sweet raisins and not much more. I will refrain from describing the palate beyond the word ‘challenging’, and avoids the opportunity of a cola bottle trifecta

It seems my initial desire to avoid wine on this holiday, due to the local stuff not being up to scratch, and the exorbitant prices on imported wine was justified. Back to Bintang and Bali Hai for me!! Cheers!

I was determined to avoid wine during my trip to Bali, yet a poster pronouncing a clutch of awards for Balinese wine awarded by Asian Wine Review this year forced me to have a dabble. So, here is your crash course in Balinese wine, with a Hatten Wines tilt, and this Aga white wine ·  Local wine is produced to satisfy the tourist trade, and combat the crazy high taxes and wine prices in Bali ·  Balinese grape known as Belgia (a variant of Muscat of Alexandria and Ribier), is essentially a table grape adapted to wine production ·  Belgia is grown between two volcanos in the North of Bali, and manage to grow all year round due to the climate, so up to 3 harvests, with a weary nod to challenging humidity ·  Don Buchanan took over in 2008 from Frenchman Vincent Desplat who founded the winery in 1994 ·  Wine label design is a traditional Balinese painting by I Wayan Barwa depicting the legend of Bawang Putih

Hatten Wines Aga White is a non-vintage amalgam. Quite the fruity nose, big tropical number, pineapple, mango and maybe banana skin. Medium bodied with an oily texture, the taste embodies the nose and adds lemon squeezed honeydew melon to the mix, complete with bitterness you get from the white pith. Sweetness upfront despite the dry white wine tag, but chased by high acidity. Forget the complexity, mid palate, or length, this is built to cut through spicy seafood, with a fruity low 11.5% alcohol delivery, and surely better than the Aussie Yellowtail that is literally everywhere I look. Cheers!
