🇳🇬 NAIJA UNDER THE NUMBERS | EPISODE 1

🎙️ ₦68.32 TRILLION: THE QUESTION EVERY NIGERIAN SHOULD ASK.

What does Nigeria's ₦68.32 trillion federal budget actually mean? And how can citizens know what public spending delivers?

In this episode, we break down the numbers, explore the difference between budget allocations and actual spending, and examine why transparency and accountability matter.

Because approving a budget is one thing. Understanding how public money is used is another.

This is more than a podcast. It's an attempt to make government information easier to understand through AI-powered visuals, evidence-based storytelling, and civic education.

📊 Follow the facts.
🔎 Ask better questions.

📣 TODAY IN HISTORY: OCTOBER 20, 2020

On this day, young Nigerians continued to make history through the #EndSARS movement, taking to the streets to demand an end to police brutality, respect for human rights, and a country where citizens could live with dignity and justice.

Six years later, we remember those who lost their lives, those who were injured, and everyone who stood up to demand a better Nigeria. We also reflect on the questions the movement left us with about justice, police accountability, and the protection of citizens’ rights.

#EndSARS remains a reminder that history is shaped by citizens who dare to speak up and that meaningful change requires accountability beyond the moment of protest.

We remember. We reflect. We keep demanding accountability.

A budget tells us what government plans to spend, but who checks whether that money delivers what it was meant to, and where do you even begin? 👀

As part of @aceppower’s Youth Champions for Fiscal Accountability Fellowship, our Country Manager, Jennifer Moffatt @minerva_jpy, led a session titled “Raising Voices, Tracking Budgets: Empowering Young People for Accountable Governance,” showing young people how to move beyond conversations about public spending and take practical steps towards accountability.

The session explored Ghana’s budget framework, how budgets are formulated and implemented, where to begin when tracking public expenditure, and how young people can engage with the fiscal decisions that shape their communities.

She also highlighted practical budget-tracking tools that can help citizens identify discrepancies, advocate for better outcomes, and turn questions into evidence and concerns into meaningful civic action.

📣 TODAY IN HISTORY: OCTOBER 19, 1986

On this day, Samora Machel, Mozambique’s first President and a key figure in the country’s liberation struggle, died in a plane crash that claimed 34 lives, including several government officials.

Machel led Mozambique to independence from Portuguese colonial rule in 1975 and served as president until his death. His leadership remains an important part of Mozambique’s history and its journey towards self-determination.

His story reminds us that the struggle for independence is also a story about leadership, nation-building, and the future people envision for their country.

Ghana, we love a good “I heard…” 😭😂

Now, see when it comes to public money, the gist is only the beginning of the story...✍️

You need to know that a budget can make promises, but only delivery can keep them; and an allocation is not the same as disbursement. 👀

An allocation is only a plan, not actual release of funds or expenditure❗️

So before you carry the matter from the Trotro to the family WhatsApp group, ask a few more questions;

Has the money moved beyond paper?
Did the project move beyond promise?

That should tell you what you need to know.🙄

Being an active citizen means knowing when to join the conversation, when to challenge the narrative, and when to follow the money.

Not all gist is gospel, Charley.

Nigeria’s voter register has grown substantially since the return to democracy in 1999, yet voter turnout in Presidential Elections tell a completely different story.

This week at the Creative Changemakers Fellowship, I learned that budgets aren’t just numbers, they’re promises. And promises need to be tracked.

Here are a few tools under tools under BudgIT you can can use in tracking:

👉🏾GovSpend — tracks actual government spending using Nigeria’s Open Treasury data

👉🏾Open Nigerian States — a dedicated open-data portal for each of the 36 states

👉🏾State of States — their flagship report comparing fiscal performance across all states

👉🏾FG Budget Dashboard — federal budget tracking

👉🏾PHC Tracka — specifically tracks primary healthcare project delivery

👉🏾Tracka — BudgIT has reached more than 22 million citizens through its fiscal transparency initiatives, with tools including Tracka, GovSpend, Live Results, Me.BudgIT.org, Open States, Kwerty, and the Federal Government Budget Dashboard

We have so many other powerful CivicTech tools worth knowing such as:

📊 Budeshi — by PPDC
📊 Follow the Money & Udeme — by CODE

And if the government won’t talk, the Freedom of Information Act says we have the right to ask anyway.

As a content creator, this week taught me that storytelling isn’t just about emotion, it’s about pairing that emotion with facts people can’t dismiss.

I hope you learned something new? I will see you within the week happy new week Monday is here already 😁.

THE REIGN OF LANDLORDS

Landlords are reigning now.
They sting like scorpions while inflation spreads its venom.

And tenants are forced to choose,
Between a healthy meal
and filling a landlord's pocket.

The roof is still leaking.
The pipes remain broken.
The walls still look the same,
Yet the landlord increases the rent.

Tenants labour to earn for landlords,
Whose hunger for the fallen naira keeps rising.
Who is to blame?

Should we ask the court?
Should we question the National Assembly?
Should we call out the housing agencies?
For this is a national emergency.

A roof is a right not a ransom.
So we will not be silent until the reign is over.
We will write. We will speak out. Until housing is for living not for bleeding us dry.
