A new podcast on the camps from Spencer Ford of Salt Lake City. He buttonholed me at the JAMP Topaz Pilgrimage and convinced me of his interest in the story of Frank Emi and the Heart Mountain Fair Play Committee. We recorded a conversation in July about WE HEREBY REFUSE and his "History for the Reckoning" podcast is now launching on February 19. He says he expects my episode on camp resistance to drop in May.

See his podcast page here: https://www.historyforthereckoning.com/2531545

And view his Instagram trailer where I see he also nabbed Lorraine Bannai, Eric Muller, Chizu Omori, Claudia Katayanagi, Susan Kamei Leung, Emily Inouye Huey, and Mr. Takei: https://www.instagram.com/p/DUhW3oSjfOL/

Join the History for the Reckoning Podcast where we’ll be diving into this critically important history featuring historians, activists, and the people who experienced these US concentration camps firsthand.

Bay Area filmmaker @ckbiosphere Claudia Katayanagi makes it crystal clear why we must push back today against the Fed's misapplication of the Alien Enemies Act aimed at brown-skinned immigrants by looking back on how it was used unjustly to arrest and incarcerate 120+K Japanese Americans after the bombing of Pearl Harbor. Link to her episode is found in my bio.

#OTD in 1943, the #MoabCitizenIsolationCenter opened in #Utah's desert landscape. Unlike #WRA facilities like Manzanar or Tule Lake, Moab was specifically used to hold #JapaneseAmericanCitizens who had been labeled as 'troublemakers' by camp administrators such as the men considered responsible for the #ManzanarRiot.

On April 23, 2025, #UtahraptorStatePark will be hosting a day of events in Moab for the opening of the new interpretive panels about the Moab Citizen Isolation Center at the park. Please email jparsonsbernstein@utah.gov with any questions.

I came to Topaz to see just where Northern California residents like Mitsuye Endo and Toshio Mori were taken. I wanted to feel for myself the dried silt of what was once Lake Bonneville that was released as a flour-like dust when Army contractors chained off the native greasewood, as Yoshiko Uchida described in her “Desert Exile” and that I wrote into the script of our graphic novel for Ross Ishikawa to draw so well. Bits of wood, nails, and stovepipes from the barracks still litter the ground of the one-square-mile site that I walked with friends like Patricia Wakida and Kiku Hughes, who drew it for her own graphic novel, “Displacement.” Hanging out at dinner with fellow filmmakers Claudia Katayanagi, Emiko and Chizu Omori, and activists Karen Korematsu, Nancy Ukai, and JIm Russell.

We are still accepting last minute registrations! This could be the only pilgrimage JAMP does to Topaz, so don't miss out! The map of Topaz shows where the families of our pilgrims lived while they were in camp.

Five more days to register for the JAMP Topaz Pilgrimage, taking place Sept. 6-9, and hear Priscilla Ouchida and I on that Sunday share the story she uncovered of the real life of Supreme Court plaintiff Mitsuye Endo, as portrayed in "We Hereby Refuse." Then on Monday join Kiku Hughes, Emily Inouye Huey, and I for an authors panel where I will present "The Literature of Japanese American Incarceration: Resistance at Topaz," with a focus on the protest to loyalty registration by the Topaz Residents Committee.

Just announced: JAMP is doing a pilgrimage to Topaz!

JAMP is thrilled to announce that our next pilgrimage will be to Topaz, Utah! Topaz is the camp where Kimiko’s family was incarcerated during WWII, which makes this a more personal trip.

Stay tuned for more details, and we look forward to being in community with other Topaz survivors and descendants!

This pilgrimage is made possible through a generous grant from The Henri and Tomoye Takahashi Charitable Foundation.
