the reality of the marathon.

the truth is, it’s hard. every time. it’s not flawless. but that’s also what makes it so beautiful. there’s a unique sensation that comes only from conquering something so few people ever do.

this marathon was not mine. it was only my second race, and going into it, i felt extremely prepared. throughout my training block, i felt strong and fast. i was hitting my paces and then some. but the truth is, there’s only so much you can prepare for. rain isn’t one of them.

ten miles in, my soggy feet began to burn, like throbbing blisters with every single step. a pain that is, to be completely honest, agony. for the first time, i truly didn’t want to be there. DNFing was not an option, but walking felt wrong—and painful, too. it’s a strange kind of sadness to pass people who are there to cheer you on as you conquer something so big, while inside, you feel conquered yourself.

so yes, the truth is, it can suck. it can really suck to feel so ready for something and watch it not pay off the way you imagined. but that’s okay. a finish is still a finish, and walking does not impede on that glory.

another aspect that goes unnoticed is how you’re affected afterwards. aside from it taking time for your body to heal, the whole training process takes a toll on you. it’s hard to regain that spark for running again, and so easy to feel like you’re not training “hard enough” anymore. it’s a learning curve that just. takes. time.

i won’t be running another marathon for a while, and that feels bittersweet. i love the process. i love the discipline. because the marathon has a way of humbling you. it strips you down to what you’re really made of, and even on days when it takes more than it gives, it leaves you knowing yourself a little better than before.

the first few photos are from honolulu and the last are from the flying pig. i’m extremely proud of myself for running two marathons this year and even more excited for what’s to come. here’s to patience, growth, and learning to never quit.
