The last time I saw Trevor was at my wedding. True to form, Trevor brought the enthusiasm and good vibes.

I’m not sure why Trevor didn’t want people to know he was sick, but if I had to guess, I suspect he couldn’t bring himself to harsh on anyone’s mellow. Because Trevor was the guy who brought the stoke. Had the fun. Saw the good. Turned the volume to 11. Played hard. Every day. Damn, so many of us loved him for that.

I wish I could have said goodbye.

I would have told him thanks. Thanks for making those early years on the U.S. Ski Team so fun. I was only 16—we were both new to the team. That time could have been intense and one-dimensional, but it wasn’t. It was the opposite. From conditioning camps to racing go-karts, there were always side-adventures. Weeks at the Olympic Training Center in San Diego weren’t just testing and training, they were trips to the beach and hours in the ocean. I know how to surf because of Trevor—chasing him out to break, watching the swell, noticing what he paddled for, and with time, figuring it out for myself.

I would have told him that he's the kind of coach I hope my kids will have one day. Someone who sees the promise in every athlete, and invests passion and interest in each and every one. Trevor cared so much. His gears were always turning. There wasn’t a moment he wasn’t trying to figure out new ways to help his athletes—a new way to think about line, a new way to explain technique, a new tweak to try. And every conversation on the hill or watching video was an optimistic one—he saw what was possible, not just what was wrong. Most days, I believed in myself because Trevor did.

I would have told him about skiing with my kids. How awesome it is. That Leo got a taste of carving this winter, and that Nori’s pretty sendy. He would have chuckled and his eyes would have lit up, because that’s what Trevor’s eyes did when he was talking about anything rad, fun, or remotely related to skiing.

And finally, I would have told him that I’ll miss him. That life’s not fair. And that I’ll play Metallica loud, ski hard, and catch as many waves as I can—until we meet again.

There is always more to the story... After a hard week, I’ve been reminded that social media is guilty of promoting and even advocating a false sense of what’s “normal”.
We all have complexities, adversities and realities of life that are often left unsaid. I encourage you to be kind with yourself and others as there is always more than what meets the eye. ❤️
