Clare Hawkinson’s @clarehawkinson inspired solo show opens at Alto Beta on Sunday, October 18th with a reception from 3-5PM. She eloquently writes “Across this body of painting/sculpture hybrids, my methodology is cyclical and digressive, patterned and simultaneous: on riverbanks and pavement, sand, soil, and soot, in any place I take up residence in, I find myself as the mudlarker, beachcomber, gleaner, waste picker. I walk with eyes oriented downwards, and work tethered to the ground, speculatively sorting and composing, repetitively picking, peeling, containing. Fragments are mended and joined, transformed and preserved in material binders. I see these gestures in alignment with craft traditions and queer, feminine visual aesthetics historically associated with excess, waste, repair, and reuse. As much as my practice measures then reworks my own consumption of matter, I am focused on more generally considering how humans develop reciprocal relationships with the in-human, object, or refuse under social conditions of excess, isolation, or instability. I consider how bringing our bodies into closer proximity to the microscopic, the material realities of our surroundings, inadvertently exposes underlying sociopolitical and environmental conditions.”

Exceptional studio visit with Altadena native Clare Hawkinson @clarehawkinson this week in anticipation of her debut solo show this October at Alto Beta. Clare makes rich and surprising sculptural paintings and painterly sculptures. Fragments and detritus are a thru-line in these inventive constructions- some found out in the world, others, created in-studio. Associations to post-war experimental art abound and there is a pleasing hint of the archeological in her process. These works are full of possibility, gritty beauty, material curiosity, and are wonderful to see up close and in person- coming soon!

𝘚𝘶𝘱𝘱𝘦𝘳 enacts the turning of the season by shearing layers to reveal the inner creature, a harvest feast; constructed in cotton, wool, linen, and paper, materials that remember the work of our hands. I move through ritual as a study of commensalism between the body and labor. I propose an alternative rural landscape, a masquerade of daily rituals, balancing absurdity and domestication: tailored silhouettes bound by close buttons, padded silhouettes emphasizing the body, and busting the seams of unfinished edges.⁣

𝘚𝘶𝘱𝘱𝘦𝘳 reframes garments as a semiotic skin, a seasonal marker, a communal archive. The passage of time becomes visible on the body—worn, shed, and celebrated.⁣
