Clare French, Thamesmead, 2021
Filmed through lockdown… So a start stop production.

The Clare French Film: Now on the 1968 Film Group YouTube channel.

Official Selection: Roma Short Film Festival
Official Selection: Munich New Wave Film Festival
Official Selection: Tokyo International Film Festival

Clare’s reductive, monochrome practice considers the constructed, protean nature of human systems of meaning. This takes place primarily through her investigation into the constitution of painting; physically, materially and art-historically, which aims to complicate modes of making and assumed conceptual certainties.

Situated within Modernism and Post-Minimalism, Clare develops her work according to arbitrary rules or patterns that remain flexible while operating an internal logic.

Peter Bromley’s documentary on the Artist Clare French highlights French’s unique working art practice in her Thamesmead based studio. Interviews with French explain how her art comes together and why.

Last chance to catch (de)fragmentation – closing tomorrow!

Gallery 2, @qssartstudios QSS Studio, Belfast

🗓 Final day: Thursday, April 10th, 2025

Opened: March 13 during Late Night Art East @latenightart_belfast

I was at the opening of Meadhbh McIlgorm's (@champagne_clouds._) curated show (de)fragmentation, and I can’t recommend it enough.

This experimental group exhibition is a brilliant exploration of how artists reexamine and reuse past trials, tests, and studies—transforming them into something new. It’s a deep dive into the "stuff" that accumulates throughout an artist's practice, offering fresh narratives from familiar fragments.

These works go beyond the idea of defragmentation as a digital process. They reflect the careful, mindful making needed today in a world facing a climate emergency, prioritizing reuse and transformation in art.

What’s even more exciting is that the exhibition features some of the most respected artists working in Northern Ireland today. I highly recommend experiencing it before it closes tomorrow!

Featuring works by:
Alacoque Davey · Anushiya Sundaralingam · Cathy Scullion · Clare French · Gail Ritchie · Grace McMurray · Kate O’Neill · Meadhbh McIlgorm · Sharon Kelly · Vasiliki Stasinaki

@alacoquedavey · @anushiyaartist
@cscullionart · @claremfrench · @gailxritchie · @graciemcm · @kateonart · @champagne_clouds._ · @sharonkellyartist · @vasilikistasinaki

Don't miss this thoughtful, resource-conscious, and visually rich show before it closes tomorrow!

Thanks @qssartstudios and @photosbysi for the lovely documentary photos of the (de)fragmentation exhibition. Open today and tomorrow 10-4. I'm about for a few hours on Saturday morning (10ish - 1pm if you need a weekend visit) OR book to come along next Tuesday evening for an alternative gallery tour and conversation as part of @imaginebelfast with myself and guest artist @thelianbell - Lian is a Dublin based artist who also supports other artists and arts workers by designing acts of community. With a background in scenography, cultural project management, and social activism, she has worked over the past 25+ years with some of the most significant arts organisations and contemporary performance makers in Ireland.

I'm so excited to continue the wonderful conversations around making, material and memory. Will put the link on stories and it can also be found on the QSS and imagine Belfast websites.

(de)fragmentation" is an experimental group show featuring mixed-media female artists, running in Gallery 2 of @qssartstudios opening March 13th and running until to April 10th.

Curated by me (Meadhbh), the exhibition explores the review and/or reuse of the varied “stuff” accumulated throughout an artist’s practice.

In putting together the exhibition I have asked artists - whose work I admire and relate to, to join me. Through shared time, conversations, and even shared storage space at QSS, I’ve come to know that they, too, are serial ‘keepers of stuff’—artists whose practices fluidly cross mediums and materials.

The concept of defragmentation serves as a metaphor here. In the face of the climate emergency, this theme encourages artists to prioritize revisiting and reusing existing materials over creating new ones, making mindful use of available resources and/or creating space re-organise thoughts. The curatorial concept is a development for the ‘ReView exhibition and gathering’ project I did with the @glasssocietyofireland in 2022, creating an exhibition opportunity that attempts to be as regenerative as possible - not asking for more from artists OR from the environment but instead breathing new value into existing work and shaping space for reflection and imagination.

Do come see it. X

This seems apt right now for what’s happening in my life. An artwork I inherited from and by the wonderful one-of-a-kind @prettypolly46 Matt Poland who we all miss each and everyday.

Hearing your voice a lot at the moment oh beautiful and hilarious soul! 🥰

Hey everyone, I’m back on video again. Exciting news—I’m thrilled to introduce the new digital printing suite here at @turnerframing! Now offering custom print and frame packages for artists and anyone needing high-quality prints, from wedding photos to interior design pieces. Currently working on an awesome run for @danfergusonart—some as prints, others framed to his specs. 🌟 We Are QSS at 40 Exhibition 🌟

Last night’s opening at Queen Street Studios was an incredible celebration of the artistic talent that has shaped QSS over the past 40 years. The exhibition beautifully reflects the broad range of work from both current and former members, highlighting the democratic selection process that brought together emerging and established artists under one roof.

It was a real joy to meet old friends and colleagues, reminisce over old photographs and see how we’ve all evolved, while making new connections with artists and discussing their work. A huge well done to all the artists and everyone involved in pulling it all together and to Eamonn Maxwell for curating with such expertise, care, and a true curator’s eye. Special well done to Trojan workers, Cathy and Meadhbh, who seemed to have done the heavy lifting.

Despite the immense challenges facing the arts sector, creativity and innovation have continued to flourish. If this exhibition is an example of what can happen, imagine the possibilities if the sector were better resourced and this model replicated across Northern Ireland.

Don’t miss it! Running until 12th December.

When we say large-scale, we really mean it.

The upcoming ‘We are QSS at 40’ exhibition spans both our gallery spaces, and features work from our 47 studio artists, as well as 14 former QSS members.

We are coming to the final days of our install before we open our doors and welcome you to the launch of ‘We are QSS at 40’, and we can’t wait to show you the enormous array of pieces that will be on display. See you on Thursday!
