It’s Sunday morning. Someone else is leading the song you usually sing, and you’re trying to worship without wondering why they didn’t ask you.

You want to serve. But being needed somewhere other than your strongest gifting can feel a lot like being overlooked.

Clark Beckham shared how his role at The Belonging Co changed—and the way he described that assignment puts a different perspective on what we think our church owes us.

You finish leading Sunday’s last song. People tell you how gifted you are. You smile, but you’ve been wondering why something that comes so naturally still doesn’t feel like the right assignment.

Clark Beckham was sitting with a group of worship leaders when one question made him rethink how he’d ended up leading worship.

His answer challenged something he’d assumed about himself—and about what God wanted.

Your most talented singer keeps saying no to the team. She might be right.

Clark Beckham came in second on American Idol, then spent years on the parking team at his church before anyone asked him to sing. The first time he watched the band there, his thought was relief: this is a place where I'm not needed at all. Later, a church staff kept trying to coax one of his students onto the worship team, and he told her something most of us would never say out loud.

In the full episode he walks through his whole octagon peg talk, what he actually told her, and the book that got him free of the guilt.
