QUALITY OF LIFE - ISSUE ONE - 1997

Created by TL.ONE, Tod Lange, out of Hackettstown, New Jersey, Quality of Life had one foot in New York subway history and the other in where graffiti had already moved next.

And that title lands differently in 1997.

By then, under Giuliani, “quality of life” had become loaded language in New York, tied to policing graffiti and other street-level offenses. I don’t know if TL.ONE meant the title as a direct shot at that, but on a graffiti magazine from this period, the irony is hard to miss.

The cover is pure 1990s. Photoshop page curl, drop shadows, radial blur. For a minute, those effects were everywhere.

Then you open it.

A BLADE interview. TL.ONE. CLARK. SACH. REVS and COST. SAINT. NACE. KET. HUSH.

Freights. Walls. Billboards.

The subway era had changed, but graffiti had already found other surfaces.

KET with a throw-up on a freight.
HUSH on freight steel.
NACE crushing an ad I still can’t identify.
KAWS killing a Molson Ice billboard.

And yes, Molson Ice.

Ice beers were everywhere for a minute in the ’90s. Remember that whole wave? Even the billboard dates the page.

Then I noticed the ad.

SOHO DOWN & UNDER.

That one is personal.

I found Soho Down & Under in the very early ’90s and kept going back until it closed. That’s where I bought the majority of the graffiti magazines in this collection.

Most of the archive still carries the original Soho Down & Under price/date stickers.

They’re part of the artifact now.

The back cover takes it right back to the subway. Tags everywhere, a SKEME outline stretched across the seats.

Subway cars. Freights. Walls. Billboards.

Graffiti didn’t disappear.

It changed surfaces.
