“Bharatanatyam is for girls.”

Amit Debnath heard versions of this while growing up in Nadia, West Bengal. But instead of putting away his ghungroo, he chose to keep dancing.

Coming from a middle-class family, Amit eventually moved to Mumbai because financial struggles meant he had to stop his dance classes and find work to support his family.

But he never stopped practising.

Whenever he gets the time, Amit returns to Bharatanatyam, the art that gave him discipline, confidence and a sense of belonging.

Now, he hopes his journey can challenge the idea that classical dance has a gender.

His dream is simple: that one day, a boy from a small town sees him dance and thinks, “Amio parbo.” I can do it too.

Because for Amit, Bharatanatyam is not about whether you are a boy or a girl. It is about art, expression, storytelling and the courage to follow what you love.
