One of polo’s great mysteries is why, as one of the least commercially capitalised sports in the equestrian ecosystem, it refuses to sit down and learn from its peers. They share the same core asset for capturing attention: the horse. Yet while disciplines like showjumping or racing look outward to create long-term value, polo prefers to remain on the sidelines.

The industry’s primary celebration is social media follower growth—a digital metric that, incidentally, is easily bought—yet needle-moving changes stay elusive and significant institutional investment remains absent.

The contrast is clear. When The Jockey Club announced Greg Maffei as its Round Table keynoter, it addressed curiosity over how a veteran executive conceives a franchise-based racing league. Maffei is renowned for his role in advising on FIFA’s commercial restructuring and driving Formula 1’s record revenues toward US$ 4 billion in 2025. Now, he aims to raise US$ 30 million for an F1-inspired Horse Racing League.

Horse racing has it all: tradition, drama, glamour, and stars—much like polo. The key to this new league is introducing the thrill of fixed teams, building dramatic rivalries, and sustaining championship tension race after race.

Polo offers the exact opposite. Even insiders struggle to recall which team lineups certain players represented last season. This lack of continuity inhibits audience loyalty and repels corporate capital.

Against this backdrop, the equestrian world's most influential organisations are adopting concepts from established professional sports, technology, and entertainment. To grow, the horse industry is looking outward, moving its commercial mindset from the margins to centre stage.

Polo lacks global governance and benchmark leadership. It fails to grasp that opportunity lies not in copy-pasting models, but in drawing inspiration from them. The organisations defining the next decade will blend tradition with proven business models, rather than delegating key functions to amateur cronyism.

Having fun at the FL Derby Charity Golf Tournament! ⛳️🐴

What an amazing day for an amazing cause. Our horses are what make our sport and we loved seeing everyone out on the course for the cause. Familiar faces on the course included Ron Nicoletti, Griffin Johnson, and your favorite jockeys like Joel Rosario, Corey Lanerie, and Diego Herrera. Hope to see some new faces next year!
