It’s a Great Barbet🐦 - Psilopogon virens - largest of the Asian barbets.
This barbet sat there for a good 2 minutes. Just looking around, changing poses like he knew he was being photographed.
The Great Barbet (Bada Basanta) - the largest barbet in India. Loud, shy, and ridiculously colorful. You usually hear its kay-oh call echoing through the forest long before you spot it.

The forest was silent. Dry leaves 🍃, afternoon light, nothing moving. And then my guide whispers - “ Tiger “ right there. 30 feet away. Perfectly blended with the dry grass and shadows. We would have right past it .

Thus is why I love the jungle- it never reveal itself easily. You have to learn to SEE.

In the heart of the Terai, there’s an unexplored area called Suraj Range.
Here the light barely touches the forest leaves, but I found them😍🐯

Three little paws🐾jumping around in perfect
sync. They haven’t learned to roar yet, they still stumble, but their energy hypnotises you😇 This is by far one of my most precious Tiger sightings 🐅

There was a time when seeing Baya Weavers feeding in millet fields was almost a part of every monsoon. As the first rains approached, these tiny architects would begin weaving their beautiful nests, becoming one of nature’s most wonderful signs that the monsoon had arrived. Along with them, if you were lucky, you might even spot the migratory Black breasted Weaver (just few of them) quietly feeding among the grains.

Moments like these are slowly becoming uncommon.

Over the years, I noticed that many of the millet and grain fields I used to visit have disappeared. Curious, I spoke to a few farmers. Most of them told me the same thing - they no longer find it profitable to grow these crops. Birds feed on the grains, the harvest reduces, and making a livelihood becomes difficult. It’s hard to blame them. Every farmer works with hope and every loss matters.

But then I met one farmer who reminded me that kindness still exists.

When I asked if I could photograph the birds in his field, he smiled and said,
Don’t worry… let the birds eat. You come whenever you want and take your pictures. Once you’re done, I’ll harvest the crop 😍

Those simple words stayed with me.

He wasn’t just protecting his crop, he was protecting a small piece of nature. He knew these birds had become fewer over the years and he genuinely wanted them to return every monsoon. His field wasn’t just farmland, it had become a refuge for life.

Standing in the middle of that millet field, surrounded by the soft calls of Baya Weavers, a shy Black breasted Weaver, munias and the quiet generosity of a farmer who chose compassion over profit, I realized that conservation doesn’t always begin in forests or sanctuaries.

Sometimes, it begins in the heart of a farmer.

If these beautiful monsoon visitors continue to grace our fields, it will be because of people like him - people who understand that a few grains shared with birds are never truly lost. They become songs, memories, photographs and a reminder that we are only one small part of nature.

To that humble farmer, thank you.

People like you don’t just grow crops…
You help keep the monsoon alive. 🌾🐦
