🎤 Excited to share I'm speaking at @seriousplayconf 2026 at Duke University this week — Aug 7th! My session: "Holding the Room: Navigating Doom Bias and False Hope with Climate-Focused Serious Games" 🌍🎲 I'll be sharing what I've learned facilitating my game Climate Cooldown and its companion curricula — and handing over a practical toolkit for game-based learning + eco-emotions in the classroom. SPC26 brings together an incredible global community working across games, learning, health, and social impact — talks, workshops, panels, an expo, and an arcade zone. If you'll be in Duke, let's connect! #seriousplay26 #seriousgames #gamebasedlearning #educationalgames

What a day at the FLOWSTATE Earth Month Design Challenge Showcase. Got to dig into the full design process behind Climate Cooldown with students from Mission Bit at the Verizon Innovation Center in SF — and then watch them take those same skills and build games of their own. The video says it all: from the entrance to the speakers to the students deep in their game dev challenge... and yes, that timelapse of them playing Climate Cooldown at the end is my favorite part 🌍 Grateful for the amazing co-panelists Rexanne Martin (go check out KATOA!) and Christina Ortega, MPA, CEO of Mission Bit — and a huge shoutout to Allister Capati for putting this together. This is why I do this work. #GameDesign #GamingForImpact #YouthInnovation

🌐 Honored to be presenting at Scenarios Forum 2025 in Leeds, UK hosted by the Priestly Center for Climate Futures at the University of Leeds. Some of the main topics covered at the conference are:  - The future of scenarios in the Intergovernmental Panel on Climate Change (IPCC) and the Intergovernmental Platform on Biodiversity and Ecosystem Services (IPBES)  - Future population health and health systems under the Shared Socioeconomic Pathways (SSPs)  - Regional SSPs in practice: What we have learned and what lies ahead?  I will be presenting on “Serious Board Games on Climate Change as a Tool for Modeling Scenarios”. In short, I created the game Climate Cooldown as a means for us to play out scenarios based on our in-game collective actions and decisions. We get the chance to see what it takes to turn things around through a fun, social and challenging educational game. Lastly, I want to thank those of you that helped donate or spread the word about the GoFundMe for the Davis Data Driven Change (D3C) student research team. Your support helped enable this team to participate in this conference. 🌈 Let's continue to improve our climate modeling for a better future on this planet! 🌍🌎🌏

If Men Cooked in Rural Kitchens: Would Safety Be Prioritized? This is the question we ask today. Imagine a man in a rural kitchen, crouched over a mud stove, choking on thick smoke that burns his eyes to tears. His hands blistered from unpredictable flames, stirring a pot as the air grows heavy, each breath a struggle. A child sits nearby, coughing, lungs straining against the same toxic haze. The cramped, windowless space traps heat and fumes, turning every meal into a health risk. If men were the ones spending hours here daily, would this be dismissed as “just part of cooking”? Rural kitchens kill. Over 3.8 million people die annually from household air pollution, with women and young children hit hardest—lungs scarred, eyes irritated, lives shortened. Women, tethered to these smoky hearths, inhale the equivalent of 20 cigarettes a day in fine particulate matter, per studies from the @GlobalAllianceforCleanCookstoves Women bear this burden, their bodies and spirits worn by smoke, burns, and the grueling task of gathering firewood. The kitchen, a place meant for care, becomes a crucible of harm, its dangers normalized as “women’s work.” If men were the ones coughing, burning, aching, would society stand idly by? Male-dominated spaces like factories or mines have seen safety regulations, ventilation systems, and protective gear enforced when risks emerge. The International Labour Organization notes that occupational hazards in male-heavy industries prompt swift policy responses—think asbestos bans or machinery guards. If men cooked in these lethal kitchens, would we see chimneys, cleaner fuels, or stoves that don’t choke their users? Would the global narrative, now mired in carbon credits and stove tech specs, pivot to demand spaces that don’t kill? The kitchen remains a paradox: a hearth that nurtures and destroys. If men faced this daily toll, would change come faster? Why does it take imagining men in their place to question the injustice of kitchens that harm women and children? What does it say that their suffering is so easily ignored? First image is AI generated as truly, it is difficult to find an image of a man crouched over a smoky stove.
