Rating: ⭐️⭐️⭐️
Director: Darren Aronofsky
Year: 2025
Country: 🇺🇸
Thoughts Below: ⬇️⬇️⬇️

In the midst of 90s nostalgia Austin Butler’s baseball star prospect is forced to turn rogue in what is a playful take on the Hitchcockian “wrong man” formula. Aronofsky who’s always provided masterful characterisation whether it’s Black Swan or the Wrestler, often delves deep into their worst fears and inner turmoils and it is no different with ‘Hank’. Even for such a loose, fun and occasionally dangerous action formula at work, Austin Butler’s fraught protagonist provides enough emotional pathos to navigate us through the myriad of set pieces. His past trauma is exactly the conflict and catalyst needed to kick his character into gear and this becomes a defining thread and the pay off for ‘Hank’ is ultimately about him reaching his potential and confronting his fears. The plot on the other hand doesn’t always land. There’s enough thrills and spills to maintain the enjoyment, but the near misses become a repetitive formula as we segue from the second act into the third. The wheels stop turning too frequently and the stop/start set pieces grow tiresome. The humorous pastiches of films like Inside Llewyn Davis and Scorsese’s After Hours are initially poignant but again fail to maintain. Like the one note plot, it’s a slight hodgepodge of visual styles. A Fight Club like aesthetic quickly dissipates into a very flat looking canvas. Despite the talents of the always supreme Matthew Libatique, and drawing from ‘Lumet like’ New York it ultimately loses its grounding. It’s a fun bubblegum picture, one in the U-Turn vein with a clear visual identity in parts and a rounded central figure played coolly by Butler in others - and whilst it’s a fun and a watchable departure for the always competent Aronofsky, it’s not a memorable one.

These towering beauties stand as the gateway to Kauai’s Southside where one will discover the famed resort town of Po’ipū and historic Kōloa Town (founded in 1835), the location of Hawaii’s first successful sugar mill.

The Tree Tunnel forms a passageway on Maluhia Road (Hwy 520, south off of Kaumuali’i Hwy) and stretches over a mile, comprised of nearly 500 eucalyptus trees.

Gifted to the community in 1911 from the Pineapple Baron, Walter McBryde, it’s one of Kauai’s most recognized landmarks.

Just for fun:
Local children (and playful adults) would attempt to hold their breath through the entire one-mile drive.

Think you can do it? The speed limit in the tree tunnel is 50 mph, so no cheating by speeding.
