Want to see one of the most active volcanoes in Central America? Here’s everything you need to know to hike to Acatenango and Fuego in Guatemala! 👇🏼

🌋 There are many tour providers to go with, but we went with @vhiking.tours and they were great! Our tour included a cabin to sleep in (we had a private one), four meals, some snacks and hot drinks at camp, and a delicious snack and juice upon finishing the hike!

🌋 The hiking groups are large (we had around 30 people), which normally isn’t our style, but we loved getting to meet some really cool people from all around the world! And when we had basically zero views the first day, they made waiting around so much fun!

🌋 The hike gains about 4,000 feet (1,200 meters) in elevation, taking you to about 11,811 feet (3,600 meters), with the chance to go even higher.

🌋 We found this to be a VERY hard hike. It is mostly loose dirt and is constantly steep until right at the end. Going up was tough on the calves and going down was a battle of “don’t slip and fall!”

🌋 Basecamp is located alongside Acatenango (a dormant volcano) and overlooks Fuego, an active volcano. Fuego normally erupts every 15-20 minutes, but it had been in a quiet period since January. We only got to see it degassing, which was still super cool, but no eruptions. It appears to be showing more activity this past week though!

🌋 You will have the option to do a sunset hike closer to Fuego (an extra Q200) and a sunrise hike to the Acatenango summit. Due to bad weather, we ended hiking closer to Fuego for sunrise, but had the weather been good, we would’ve done both!

🌋 Make sure to bring hiking poles, a headlamp, 3L of water, electrolytes (we ❤️ you @drinklmnt), and a buff. It can also get VERY cold and windy at basecamp and on the extra hikes, so pack lots of warm layers! You can also rent items from most tour providers.

To see our experience on this hike, check out our latest YouTube video! 🎥 And if you want more information on how to do this hike, what to pack, and more, we have a full guide on our website!
